Gearbox Help, Loosing Patience And Fast. :(

Recommended Posts

hey there guys, this is my first post on here, have been browsng on the forum for a while getting bits and bobs of info from various threads and have managed to undertake loads of work on my gti myself thanx to this site,

but i have a persistant problem that i just cant get rid of, and im hoping that you guys mabie able to help as im really getting fed up and loosing patience with the car,

i have a H reg 205 gti 1.9 that has a standard engine and 1.9 box with a mi16 diff, this is where the problem starts, i recently have replaced both driveshafts on the car because the cv's were slightly worn and the passenger side shaft had pulled out of the gearbox spilling oil everywhare, when i changed the driveshaft's i initially didnt change the seals in the gearbox as i assumed they would be ok (turned out to be wrong). so today i took out the driveshafts and replaced the old seals with new items from peugeot, now when i was doing this i noticed some wear/burr marks behind the seal on the gearbox casting but didnt really think too mutch of it,

so to cut a long story short i carried on and replaced both seals filled the box with oil and took the car for a spin. now to my dissbeleif when i got home and had a quick look under the car there was still oil dripping from the diff housing

now im really gutted about this and abit stumped as the car is now vibrating when idling, this vibrating dissapears when the clutch pedal is down. i do not think the vibrating is down to lack of oil as i have just put 2litres in today even though it is comming out quite quickly, does anyone have any suggestions as to where the oil may be coming from and what could be causing the vibrating, does it sound like i need a new diff housing or diff??

any help much appreciated

let me know iff im not making sence to anyone lol

cheers

Apart from the driveshaft seals , leak points could be :

- O ring on the speedometer housing

- O ring (or seal , can't remember) on the speedometer cable drive gear (it's on top of the housing , where the cable goes inside ..)

- gear selector arm seals

- gearbox housing (right in the middle , where two parts join in one piece ..)

- fifth gear cover

.. but you'll need to wash off/degrease the box/engine first , and then inspect precise spot from where it leaks out ..

.. as for vibration issue , id check the mount first :) the one beneath the battery .. and check/nip up all the gearbox - to - engine bolts ..

Did you fit the diff seals correctly? They need to sit slightly proud of the casing - if you put them in flush, they have a habit of leaking still.

Also, is it definitely gearbox oil that's leaking? The smell is quite distinctly. A leak from the crank oil seal or sump (or gearbox input seal for that matter) can often run onto the gearbox and diff housing, and make it look like that's where it's leaking from.

One other check , see if the gearbox casing is mounted solidly to the engine block and has not seperated . I had this happen on one of mine

happend to me also. check all round the bell housing for any gaps between it and the engine.
