Brake Light's Blown

Recommended Posts

weejp

Hello

I went round the 205 giving it the once over, tried the brake lights and nothing, so checked fuses they're OK, rear lights work fine, as do all other lights. So take out double filament bulbs to check and they're blown - I didn't have any spares to hand but seems odd that they go at the same time.

I had this issue at MOT last year, I thought I'd solved problem as there was a dodgy fuse.

Would there be any reason they'd blow together, or am I reading too much into this?

PS - is rear foglight an MOT item?

Rear foglight IS an MoT fail if it doesn't work.

I'll try 2 new bulbs, but I'm sceptical about them both going since last MOT, esp. as they were replaced at last MOT.

Anyway one step at a time.

Did you have the igntion on because brake lights don't work with it turned off iirc but all other lights (except individual indicators) will.

Graham.

I'm pretty sure I did, but I will bear that in mind when I give it another go later, cheers for that.

i got caught out by the ignition one once, and remember that lights must be on for the fog light to work also.

it may be that one blowing sent a surge through the system, blowing the other one also. or only having one meant that the other was under an increased load. im not sure if this is a parallel or series circuit. but if you havn't been caught out by the ignition trick then just get new bulbs and see what happens

OK, I've changed the bulbs and the fuses for brand spanking new items and the brake lights still don't work, I'm stuck here - why would only the brake lights not work?, I'm confused.

The foglight works OK though.

I recently had this problem and the actual light unit must have been damaged inside. Everything worked apart from the brake light.

I just changed the whole unit over with a second hand one and now it works fine.

Not a lot of money from ECP, might be worth picking one up from stealer if it's not too expensive to check?

Yep, it failed on the brake lights, and it is extremely likely to be the mentioned 'switch' so I'm getting one tomorrow, and get it sorted hopefully.

Is it a simple enough task? Is it covered in the Haynes by any chance?

Apart from that it was OK, a few advisories but hey it's a 20 year old 205, can't expect perfection...!!

For those prices I'd go next day from ECP but that because I'm tight!

best way to see the switch is to 'assume the position' which means lying in the seat with your head near the pedals and your feet up in the air probably on the roof. (make sure you have clean shoes so you dont get the roof lining dirty)

It was fiddly but ultimately successful so brake lights now working as they should and the car has passed it's MOT for another year.

Just wish I could afford to tax it, ah well....

Probably a silly question but are 1.9 Gti front discs and pads the same as 1.6 Gti ? They were an advisory so I'll get them done soon-ish.

No, totally different.

1.9 GTI pads;

Discs are the same size but a different offset so can't be swapped over.

Graham.
