Alternator will have 2 wires/cables.

You have a fat bastard +VE cable. This goes back to the shunt box (the black plastic fuse box originally fixed to the slam panel), and usually goes via the starter motor. So in other words it'll look like....

shunt box>starter>alternator.

The signal wire you are referring to is called the excitor wire. IIRC it's a brown wire. This goes back to the brown multiplug above the gearbox, then back along the loom, through the bulkhead, and through one of the 2 brown multiplugs under the dash, before ending up in your dash cluster where it illuminates your battery warning light.

That's your starter for ten. Now do a search for +alternator +excitor (or similar search terms) and see what you can find. You should find many topics that detail wire numbers/colours and their positions in the brown plugs.

It doesn't run from the shunt box, just directly from the battery positive terminal to the starter & alternator.

Ah OK. I was going by memory, which is a bit hazy now. I was 50/50 as to whether it was direct or via the shunt box.

It's the simplest thing in the world to wire up, and seems to cause so much confusion. I don't know why, and it certainly doesn't need a loom.

Just two wires: one thick, one thin. Thick goes to the starter solenoid and then onto the battery positive. Thin makes the battery light go out.

Go have a search for '+brown+multi*' and you'll see which of the wires in the 2 brown plugs under the steering column this thin wire should go to.

(In anticipation of another question :P )

Likewise a starter motor/solenoid combo seems to confuse people when this is only 2 wires as well; and one of those is the thick wire going to the alternator. The thin wire is the switched live activated by the ignition key. This is also one of the wires in those 2 brown plugs.

Sound guys reason me being abit confused is that there is already a live running from battery to starter motor and then. I just have a single wire left with connection at either end and looks like just joins from alternator to battery. But does it have to run from alternator through starter then to positive?

No but you can have a single wire linking them together for the main starter & alternator supply (like a standard 205 GTI) or two seperate ones direct from the battery to the starter & another battery to alternator.
