2.0 Turbo Smoking Again! It Never Stopped!

Recommended Posts

craig f90

Since i converted my 205 to 2.0t it always smoked on idle. No cat. straight through 2.5" system. Dump valve and only 5k miles.

Its on its 3rd turbo now. The weird thing is it never smokes when under load. Anyone had these issues? how did you cure It?

Please help or im gonna strip it and scrap it. £600 wasted on turbos so far.

Craigs fed up now.

Its failed the MOT twice this week due to it :o

the straight through system is probs causing the turbo to go, it will smoke a bit due to not having a cat but im not aware it smokes a lot though

I had this problem when running a standard turbo and a straight through exhaust.

If i remember there is modified double seal you need to have fitted to the turbo.

These engines also seem to suffer badly from bore wear.

I don't know how true this is but, I've read the smoking is caused by lack of back pressure in the exhaust system this affected the turbos on the earlier turbo engines (XU10j2te) for some reason. I also read that some chicken wire screwed up and put in the downpipe will give you enough back pressure to stop the smoking.

Gotta be worth a try?

Afaik if the vehicle is pre 1993 it only has to pass a basic emissions test which iirc is a max CO reading of 3.5?

So rather than guesswork let us do some reasoning.

Were these turbos new? "Known good"? Second hand unknown?

Have you ever compression tested the engine?

Has the head ever been off it to replace the valve stem oil seals?

to cure it fit a proper breather system to the engine with a one way valve fitted also , had alot of problems with these in the past

Its passed the emmisions every year with flying colours. Its an 89 so no legal need for a cat.

One was unknown purchaced off the forum. Which died with a bang!!! The other 2 were fully reconditioned items.

Had a compression test twice alls well according to the mechanic

Head hasnt been of yet. But i know a man with a tool to do the seals without the need to remove the head.
