Afm Maxed Out

Recommended Posts

MerlinGTI

I have now officially run out of adjustment (screw fully clockwise - rich) on my 1.6 AFM.

This gives me 1.3 CO on idle. Lucky :)

I would like to know why Ive run out though? I run a bucket load of advance on the dizzy, could this be why? Related to be giving the afm a good old carb cleaning a while ago? Whats your money on?

Car is otherwise running beautifully, infact the best it ever has.

Cheers

sounds like someone may have messed with the spring tension, I hate it when people do that.

how much do you call a lot of advance? no pinking under load?

No pinkage Mr WP, dizzy probably has another 5mm (at a guess) before thats maxed out too. I put this down to having a mild cam and no vernier pulley?

Thing is I have had plenty of adjustment up untill recently (day I changed vac advance and cleaned AFM/TB out). Its been the same AFM since Ive owned it. The white sealent on the AFM 'lid' looks reasonably 'factory' as much as one can tell. Im certinally not ruling AFM out mind, just wanted to know opinions before I beg another AFM for testage.

Sure it's a 1.6 vac advance? Think you may have commented in the thread where I had problems with fitting the wrong one. I had to advance mine hugely before it would even idle.

Defo a 1.6 advance ;) Ordered from BOSCH myself (using Pug part numbers). The new unit was then matched up against my old broken 1.6 vac unit and compared to a 1.9 vac unit (that I had previously fitted in error :P )

check the resistance of the afm against standard values, if out, either it needs retracking or the connectors are corroded.

indeed, the only thing is that there is no value for the spring tension, white sealant doesnt sound correct to me.

Right, sorted .

Some dumbass had messed around with the spring tension, but luckley they had marked the orginal and new positions. Slackened off the spring to (well near) the orginal setting and I now have 1.5 co on idle, plenty of adjustment either way and you no longer need a battering ram to move the afm flap!

Thanks everyone

that was lucky :)

Sarty's 8 valver was quite the opposite when I collected it, the flap was sat half way with the engine off :P
