Recommended Posts

Guest 1.1_boy

i bought a 1988 1.1 205 at the weekend with the intention of doing a gti rep ( only the body and interior) and maybe an exhaust but just wondering whether it was possible in the first place and hopefully you gus could point me in the right direction.

cheers, callum

Yes it is possible, the hardest part as far as I know is fitting the arch trims as you will need to cut away some of the bodywork as the gti arches are a different shape.

i know the wheels and the bumpers will fit its just the case of fitting them, this is my first car and still need to learn my way round the 205. by all means i like getting my hands dirty and wil give it a go myself. you or anyone else know how? any advice would be helpful :)

If this is a result of insurance costs, my advice would be not to bother. You'll increase your costs anyway due to the modifications. You'd be better off waiting until the cost of insurance comes down and then get a GTI.

Welcome to the forum :)

Is your car a 3 door? If it is it will make it a bit easier for fitting the trims :)

Interior will fit without any modifications, seats and carpet will be easy but the dash will be a tad harder as it can be quite an involved job to change the whole dash.

I'm not one of those people who hates 'reps' but out of interest what is stopping you buying a GTI? I'm guessing it's the high insurance cost as your young?

Good luck and keep us posted :)

You really need the arch kit that Peugeot made for a non GTI. Standard GTI arches are a different profile at the front and also on the back. 15" wheels will catch on the outer arch too at the back which is why the GTI had a cut away metal arch.

I would run it on 14" wheels if you want to get people in the back or lower it.

Why not look at a 205 STDT as a GTI diesel if insurance is an issue. 306 DTurbos are insurance group 5 so may be a good alternative. A 205 XS is streets ahead of a 1.1 though with the GTI style dashboard

yeah its a 3 door and i just wanted to get the look of a GTI, and yeah its my first car and i wont get insured on a 1.6 :( i might just do the bumpers as by the sounds the trims starting to sound like a ball ache. plus i wasnt intending to do the dash, just seats and carpets. as i say its my first car im not guna go all out on it as im planning to get a gti after this one at a later date when i can get insured on it.

I think base models look loads better just by swapping the front and rear valances for GTI items.

Good man. Sensible approach. There's no point spending money on stupid mods to make a base model look like something better. It's a waste of money in the long run, money that could be put towards the insurance on a GTI. The only thing you gain is the exerience of doing it, but there's nothing to stop you tinkering with your 1.1 maintenance wise, and still pick up experience.

My first 1.1 was a beast :D £45 Bargain

Don't go all out just make it look smart, or fit a 106 gti engine :)

Totally agree

I wouldnt want to totally GTi a base model, just seems a waste, somewhere between the two looks great IMO

If memory serves me correctly Steve@Cornwall has a nice base model with a few GTi bits bolted up and it looks great

Good cheap runaround/first motor

Enjoy :)

haha yeah cheers, i like the look of it already but i just think you cant beat the look of the GTIs so just thought why not? but i see your point about the waste of money that can be put towards an actual GTI. And yes i do need the experience i want to get into 205s so i can modify my gti when i get one :)

My old XS. I think the 306 DTurbo wheels look great on a base model and are cheap enough now
