Strange Noise From Refurbed Beam.

Recommended Posts

rescue dude

As above, i'm getting a loud metallic ping from the near side of my beam. Only seems to be on sharp right hand turns, usually at slow speed and at compression.

The beam was fitted and refurbed by a mate so no problem getting it sorted but I have to say i'm a bit baffled by it.

Other than the "ping" it feels fine and has certainly improved the handling.

Any ideas?

Loose torsion bar? ARB not tight?

Loose damper bolt would be my guess. The bottom ones need to be torqued up to 118nm IIRC

I would guess it to be the arb end plates, check they are a nice tight fit on the end of the arb. Best off removing it, 10 min job, and go for a quick drive and see if the noise is still there.

When I get a chance i'll check it all out.

Thanks for the ideas.

I take it that it just needs tightening up?

If I do a spanner check on the beam does it need to be up in the air or under load like wishbones? Or doesn't it matter?

I just found one of my bottom damper bolts was loose, but that was causing a knocking, not a ping!

Mine sounds like someone is hitting it with a hammer.

A sort of dull ping.

Not had chance to check it out yet. Hopefully tomorrow.

No idea to be honest, i haven't fixed mine yet. So hopefully someone can answer for the both of us.

As it happens I had to loosen it off on Saturday and forgot to do it up until it was back on the deck with a wheel on so I will see if it has made a difference on Thursday when I go to the meet.

I know know what it isn't.

Torqued up the rear shocker and the bracket that holds the brake cable but it still pings.

I'm pretty certain now that it's the ARB as it's definitely something thats under tension.

I'll have another look tomorrow. ;)
