Ticking Noise More So Under Acceleration?

Recommended Posts

IOWGENTRY

Hi Everyone please help!

Today picked up my new 205 GTI Gentry, J reg, 10 months m.o.t.

There is a constant ticking noise more so under acceleration that seems quite bad. Engine seems to drive and pull ok but I imagine it could improve!!!! There is OIL in the car too!!!!

Any ideas what could be wrong?

Do you think shes blowing?

Thanks Phill

Cracked exhaust manifold? Fairly common on 8v engines, and makes a noticeable ticking-type noise that's worse under load.

I had the same before on my 8v, but when the headgasket failed I disassemble the head iand found thatl two cam bearing cap bolts were not tight as they should of been, torqued them down after lapping the valves out etc.. Once the engine was running again I found thlat the noise had dissapeared ! Could well be this ? Unless your buckets or cam is worn ?

This. Worse when you have a gromet from the bulkhead missing or not fitted properly.

sorry to hijack this one but would a cracked exhaust manifold also cause excessive fuel consumption? only asking because my 1.6 seems to have the same symptoms you describe.

Nope, not in my opinion/experience

Possibly on a cat version as I'd imagine a leak would affect the lamda readings, not sure if they made 1.6s with cats though.

could be heavy pinking, does it go away if you lift or give it part throttle?

i would go for the exhaust manifold either cracked or the gasket gone.

not had it on a pug but on my rover turbo the gasket had gone and sounded terrible (loud clicking getting louder/faster under acceleration)

I now believe it to be the manifold gasket as MADPROFESSOR and I moved air filter out the way and saw the gasket was shot!!!
