Nooooo! Have I Made A Mistake ?!

Recommended Posts

hothatch

I think I have made a terrible mistake ! I've only used normal primer on my cast aluminium inlet manifold and cam cover covers !

Is it important to use etched primer as a base coat ?

What has everyone else used ?

Thanks for all answers in advance.

Yeh that's what I'm thinking, I'm a mechanic see not a painter and I've never painted aluminuim before. Its a good job I've been told this before I reassemble them.

anyone got any other suggestions ? I think I will definatly rub them back to metal and use the right base coat. Anyone got any I deas please? What have you all used and how long has it lasted ? Thanks .

Hammerite's brilliant :D

Always worked with me, never flaked one and my strut brace is sitting right above the 6 manifold.

Can't help with your question though, never taken the time to use normal paint. I'm quite impatient.

Lol :D thanks. I just rubbed all my paint off and I'm gutted lol it come off too easy as I suspected. Due to the aluminium!

Soooo ! Here's my next question !! Is etched primer heat resistant and ok to use on my inlet manifold and my cam covers ? Help please ! I'm glad I'm not a spraye!r

I used etch primer on my MI cam cover and it was absolutely fine, so don't think you'll have any problems there.

Used some plasti-kote silver project paint on the inlet manifold (no primer just made sure it was clean) and that hasen't shown any signs of peeling either...

etched primer on cam cover should be fine and cant see a problem with it being on inlet manifold, all the cam covers that i have helped being sprayed we have used etched primer.

powder coating is good had it done on one of my old cars its a bit dear and you will need to remove it so you will be without your car but it looks spot on and will stay nice and pretty hard to damage also

Getting your bits powder coated could be a good idea as I guess you're not using the car at the mo and would look nice and professional :)

dont think he did use etch primer and thats his point???

etch is far better on alloy than normal primer, i would just leave it and see how it gets on with the heat, if it starts flaking then redo the painting.

good luck....

i used normal U-Pol primer with hammerite smooth spray over the top and was intending on laquring after. but ive now rubbed it back and was very suprised how easily it came off, glad i did just that !

yes its for my gti-6 build thats underway, powdercoating has toyed with my head because its awsome stuff and very proffessional like you said, but i can only get it done in black unless i pay the going rate. i want yellow though but its still a good idea as im back to bare metal :)

yeah thanks, ive sprayed plenty before just never ally ! hence why i was oblivious to the fact you have to use etch primer ! B) i was going to leave it like you said but ive already gone into panic mode and rubbed it right back lol! B) i might aswell do a tidy job, hence the saying. if somthings worth doing, do it propely. will get myself some acid etch tommorow.

so i think etch primer is the way to go for me so thanks everyone for the replys much appreicated. :D
