Gti-6 Electrical Problems...

Recommended Posts

fatony1

Finally got my '6 started, woo :) The converted plug and play loom i bought from Anthony on here works fine, although i have a few minor problems that i think are down to me not the loom... :)

First of all, once running, the red warning lights on both the water temp and oil pressure gauges are on all the time, as is the 'STOP' light in the cluster. The water temp gauge is working fine, although the oil pressure gauge shoots top the top on the 2nd click of the ignition, then shoots all the way back down once started and doesnt seem to be giving a reading?

Also for the oil temp sensor in the sump, i only have 1 wire from the loom but the sensor has 2 pins, does it matter what side of the sensor it is connected to as i dont seem to be getting any reading on the gauge?

Hope you can help me out, sorry if im being a bit vague

On mine I earthed the other pin for the oil temp sensor to the block, I can't remember which pin was which though.

Have you got both an oil pressure gauge and warning sender?I used a 205 gauge sender and the 306 warning switch for the light, there are normally two low pressure warning light senders in the block of a gti6 engine but only one is used, could it be the you have got a warning sender sending a signal to the gauge?

I would guess a couple of pins need swapping on brown multiplug under dash :(

Oil STOP light and oil pressure gauge are prob the wrong way round :(

I have one of Miles' T-pieces with a 205 pressure sender and the original 306 warning light switch screwed into it :(

Suppose that would make sense, the loom did come from a running GTI-6 conversion which is what i find strange :D Unless the vehicle it came from had the pins the wrong way round already...

Anyone else got any ideas? :D

Peugeot changed the wiring on the looms slightly through the years, I had the problem of switched live/starter being in the wrong plugs. Wouldn't worry about it too much.

Do what Coskev mentioned and swap the pins over, job jobbed.

Or earth the plug out and that should tell you.

That does sound possible, as there were a couple of wires I found that were the wrong way around that I corrected for you before I sent it. As I said, I bought that loom ready-converted as part of a Gti-6 engine package and never actually used it myself, hence it wasn't converted to my usual high standards!

The oil temp wire did have a blue plug on it, so that should have been a straight fit. If not, it's easy to wire up - you'll find that one of the pins will have a resistance of around 2k ohm between the pin and the sensor body / sump, and the other pin will be open circuit. You need to connect the wire to the one that gives a resistance. It takes a long time for the oil to get hot enough to read on the gauge, so don't worry if it doesn't read anything initially.

The wire for the oil pressure gauge has either been plugged into the low oil pressure switch, or the wiring is around the wrong way on the loom. Swap the two wires around on the oil pressure sender/switch and that should fix the issue.

As for the STOP, oil pressure, and water temp lights being on all the time, are they on even with the engine switched off, or only when the engine is running? If it's only when running, it's probably just that the wiring is the wrong way around as per the sensor above.

If you're still having issues with it when I'm next over your area, let me know and I'll pop over and sort it out for you :D

Thanks Anthony, was hoping you'd come to the rescue :) The STOP/oil pressure/water temp lights are only on when its running, so ill start by swapping the pins over, hopefully this will fix the gauge not working too. Any idea where i can find a diagram etc showing what each wire does on the brown plugs under the dash? (so i know what pins to swap over)

Thanks again B)

Yup, definitely just sounds like the two wires are around the wrong way then and a simple fix :)

I know that I've posted it on here before, and I know that others have as well - but here's the Phase 2 9 pin sensor plug under the dash for you :D

1. Wire #52 (Brown) - Reverse light

2. Wire #53 (Purple) - Reverse light

3. Wire #47 (Yellow) - Coolant temperature warning light

4. Wire #47A (Red) - Coolant temperature gauge

5. Wire #7A (Brown) - Alternator charge light

6. Wire #30 (Purple) - Oil pressure warning light

7. Wire #30A (White) - Oil temperature gauge

8. Wire #30B (Grey) - Oil pressure gauge

9. Wire #46 (Blue) - Starter solenoid

Sounds like in your case you need to swap wire 30 and 30B around, assuming of course that they're not both just spade connectors at the sensor end (I can't remember what they were now)

Done this on Saturday and its sorted all the problems, thanks mate :) However the oil pressure gauge sits all the way to the right hand side when running, im sure with the old 8V it sat in the middle (ish) and fluctuated with engine revs? Is it normal to sit all the way to the right? (surely it means i've got really good oil pressure? )

With cold oil and on a GTi-6, it's plausable that it might have the oil pressure reading towards the top of the gauge all of the time. However, once the oil warms up, it should behave as before with it being lower at idle and increasing with revs, just a little higher up the gauge thanks to the oil pressure improvements on the later engines.

Sounds right with the oil pressure.

Mine shoots up when cold then settles to about 1/2/just above a 1/4 (then when you rev it goes up then settles down again)

Got my rev counter working  well happy!
