4-2-1 Manifolds?

Recommended Posts

SorrentoED

I'm looking at getting a 4 2 1 exhaust manifold as i have uprated my engine so only seems right, also the OE 1 is cracked (as usual). Just wondered if the manifolds on ebay are any good (the ones that go for about £185) or whether its worth paying a bit extra for a branded one, or if anyones got 1 for sale?

I have a ProTech 4 branch very similar to those sold on eBay, and they're perfectly fine imo. You wont see any performance increase but I just bought it as a stainless rather than another cracked mild steel one.

hmmm, thats strange, I thought they were supposed to give a little bit extra performance?

I was looking at an ecosse manifold but they're about £260 + postage so probably just paying for the name.

They all claim to add performance but they don't. Or atleast not noticeably.

It's the same situation with all these air filters/fake chips.

I have sold some raceland ones to 205 owners in italy. Not sure they are going to increase performance in any way. The only way to tell would be to get them on a rolling road to see the effect of the different length primaries and secondaries...

They might increase performance a bit, but not really noticeable on the dead horse that is the 8V engine. :)

So has no-one had any rr figures to look into these then?

My engine is standard for now but i was planing to go for a raceland 4 branch and omp group n system as i heard they increase low down pick-up on the vts and gti scene and ive got a friend who swears by his pugsport exhaust, raceland 4 branch and force feed kit for every gti or vts he owns and totally standard other than these mods his rallye made 150 ish bhp on rollers if i remember right and few cars hes had in past have which is damn good considering most people seem to mod cars to loose power from what ive read about the engines, (my other friend fitted c2 bottom end etc and was furious he only made the extra 5hp over his after the mapping cost etc)

All his cars run this set-up of same parts and are always quick so its not like the rolling road lying. My 250bhp 20vt corrado had a real hard time seeing it off which was also bloody quick,

Whats peoples opinions on the omp systems then? i only want one as ive read standard exhaust gives most power in past tests and as there not available in stainless its the best option

why pay the extra though if they provide minimal gains only anyway, unless they provide more gain than cheaper ones?

racelands are only cheap as they mass produce so many in batches to get costs down arent they?

only reason im looking to replace is standard downpipe is dead and looking old and full exhaust needs a change to why not try a 4 branch if itll last and give a little bit more speed on engine pick-up power wise, im planning for lightened flywheels etc at later date so it all helps

a typiucal 4 branch will crack far sooner than the original cast item, so I'd not use that as reasoning to buy one

SorrentoEd; How modified is your engine? The standard Ph2 exhaust is perfect in terms of performance for standard & mildly tuned cars, no need for anything fancy until you've done everything else... induction, management, raised CR, >280degree cams etc

Standard manifold is iron IIRC, not steel. The earlier versions tend to crack, but the later braced ones are far less prone.

Stainless cracks very easily as said, they are however much more rust resistant of course. (If they last long enough to corrode before they've cracked... :P)

I've been thinking about it lately, but not sure if it would make a massive difference over standard manifold.Mines higher compression, newmans rally cam, headwork etc and is 153bhp.
