Rattly Topend

Recommended Posts

My engine (gti6) has always been fairly quiet with not much top end rattle, until saturday afternoon anyway. I had just had a spirited drive using all the revs and thought nothing of it until I could hear the top end rattling over my music, when I heard this I pulled over to have a look.

I checked the oil level, which was fine. With the engine running it sounded like a tappet had got air in it or something similar. I drove the car home slowly with noise persisting. I let the car rest for a few hours and started her up again, the engine was quieter but if you used more revs the noise got a bit louder again.

My original worry was that some how my engine had become a 'tapper' but as the noise isn't constant I don't think its this, so I'm wondering whether the oil I'm using is a bit too thin. Since I've had the charger on I've used Silkolene PRO S 10-50w Ester synthetic, is this stuff ok or is it too thin?

Took her out again today, when cold the noise is bearly noticable, but once warmed up and all the revs are used the noise gets louder again. With the noise there I kept the revs at about 2-3k while I drove around, the noise went very quiet again. When all the revs were used again the noise returned.

Does this sound like a top end problem or could it be something a little more serious? (little ends?)

That sounds like a tapper, exactly the same noise as mine did.

I can't work out how though, if your cam timing has remained the same since you put the engine in?

What are the compression test results after only a couple of revolutions of each cylinder?

the cam timing is deffinately spot on.

Compression was 240 psi across the board, very strange . If it is a tapper its easier to get hold of a new head than rebuild the old one isn't it?

If you do end up taking the head off, send it to Nick Watling (formerly worked for QEP) as he did the work on mine while at QEP, 3 angle seats and chamber porting and this cured the tapping that a local engineering place were unable to diagnose/rectify, plus it was cheaper than sourcing an unknown quantity head, mine is now silent.
