My feeling is that it's more a power/connection issue than a faulty sensor - certainly I know that Phase 1 Xsara VTS's (which are obviously very similar electrically to a '6) do exactly that with the clocks when you disconnect and reconnect the battery, and hence I can imagine that a bad connection somewhere would likely cause the sort of issue that you're seeing - the fact that the odo resets and the fuel needle drops supports this in my eyes, as clearly they're nothing to do with the engine management.

From memory, most of the wiring between the engine bay and interior of the car goes via a large multiplug located around the drivers side scuttle panel IIRC. Could it be that water has got into this and has corroded/shorted some of the pins, causing all manner of issues?

Mate that would drive me nuts!

My 306 dturbo does a similar thing when you reconnect the battery, are any of the fuses loose next to your right leg under the steering wheel. There's a slot to stick a screwdriver/2p, this cover pops off and check that they're all in properly.

I pulled out a few to try and fix my rev counter and it resets the clocks like what yours is doing.

Otherwise what Ant said about the plugs is my only other guess....

Dodgy negative terminal on battery?

Oops, read it too quick.

There are another 2 plugs located down near the radiator, battery side of engine. Notorious for corroding.
