Air Con Or Not Air Con...?

Recommended Posts

Tommer

Hi all,

long time no post, been a while since all my worldly possessions were told for me to buy my house... Good news tho, I didn't sell the 205! instead she's been in the garage for a while waiting for some TLC. which came in the form a new 205, year newer, Power steering and air con (supposedly).

so my query is, new car has an A/C button, but as far as I can tell it does nothing, and I can't immediately identify any A/C components under the bonnet, is there any easy way to tell if it has it? i'm not fussed either way, just want to know if its a phantom button or not.

Also, Power steering seems to not work, unless its meant to make the steering very heavy, however there is a rattly rattle rattle coming from the timing belt area of the engine bay which i'm hoping is the power steering pump being kaput.

other than that car drivers like a dream, today I swapped the 309 suspension setup from old to new car and various other bits and pieces. so will be selling red '89 1.9 gti soon

any help on PAS / AC welcomed :)

cheers all

For the air con you should have a seperate coolant radiator looking thing mounted at the front of the veichle called a condensor , this is for the air con. Will have sealed pipes going to it.

Your pas pump seems to be buggered in my opinion, just check the fluid level first though.

Let me know how you get on. I have a pas pump of a gti6 engine that I thinkl will fit, not certain though. Let me know how you get on.

Or the belt could be loose this will give heavy steering.

Does this help?

Look at the pipework to the left of the alternator...

Where abouts at the front would it be? it's not obvious when looking so I am guessing its just a phantom switch.

checked the level in the PAS reservoir, seems ok, wiggling the pulley it gives a little, so I am hoping the rattly rattle rattle is the pump and nothing serious in there.

thanks for the offer of the pump, will get back to you on that cheers :)

Ohhh, if you ever replace the panel with the standard one, can I have the old one and the switch? :)

I dont need it, just could do with a spare to keep in stock!

yeah if I replace it, this car has 5 holes in the panel. to the left of the A/C switch is another light switch front fog maybe? whereas the other car only had 3 switches

If the A/C button doesn't appear to do anything then it's likely that it needs re-gassing.

Ryan- checked for condenser and can't find one so doesn't seem to have A/C

ORB - is your first button, the lighty one, for front fogs? or does it not do anything either

Noprobs any time mate.

If you can't see a condensor or pipework. I don't think you have it. Perhaps it used to at one point.

Easy way to tell if your car had it at some point is to look in two places for tell tales.

1 - In the drivers inner wing where the wheel jack is normally mounted, is there a hole cut out that is the size of a coke can? it should recess into the wheel arch.

2 - Between the heater matrix pipes and the header tank is there a silver heat shield bolted tight to the bulkhead?

If you look at my pic you will see where both of these items are.

Thats if you have ABS fitted, not air con.

Maybe it did have AC then took a knock and perhaps damaged inner wing so the AC was removed.....
