Should I Get An Oil Cooler?

Recommended Posts

205*31*

Ok the gti I bought came with manual twin fans wired in but has no oil cooler and its a 1900 engine, should I get an oil cooler or will the fans be sufficient?. It will be very rarely used on road just a track/sprint car.

cheers :)

My personal suggestion would be ditch one of the fans and fit an aftermarket 13 or 19 row cooler (13 probably sufficient on a standard lump). To be honest if one fan can't keep it cool then there's something wrong - even better, ditch them both and fit an aftermarket Spal/etc fan, pulling through the rad instead of blowing into it - they draw so much more and do a much better job.

Are you seeing high oil temps yet anyway or are you just pre-empting? If there's no problem, no point in spending money when you don't have to, of course.

hi brumster I haven't done any track days or sprints in it yet but the oil temp guage doesn't work so have no idea on temps but it was a road rally car, i think i would feel easier with an oil cooler to be honest what are a cheap 13 row cooler then and easy to fit :)

cheers.

Get an oil cooler no question.I have just fitted a std one to my mi and it has mad a big difference. I was running a twin fan setup tbh 1 fan is ample.

Depends what you use it for, I only ever need mine on the road in summer or on track so I have it taped over for the rest of the year. If it's going to spend all it's time on track then yeah I'd go for a 16 row in the wider version, then if you find your oil isn't getting hot enough you can just tape part of it up. Much better than finding you're running too hot!

Ive bought a Mocal 13 row(with thermostat) to fit to my modified 1.9 road rally car, should work fine at night as outside temperatures arnt high anyhow.

Fitted one the other day, and tbh on the road it needs blocking off, as it is now, as it doesn't allow barely any heat into the oil at all, which isn't good.

They need to let a small amount of oil pass the thermostat all the time though,to keep the oil pressure stable

If the thermostat was closed tight then opened at 80deg when you were putting the engine to go at high revs there could be a loss of oil pressure as it flowed into cooler, and this could kill your engine :)

Was going to look for this thread at a later date but glad Iooked here now

my new gti is a 1.6 converted to 1.9 am is missing the cooler I thought it could be an issue especially as I'm planning the car gets some track use

i'm now looking at a 13 row mocal unit and thermostatic sandwich plate then to rectify this basically yea??

Well my 1.9 engine is standard I think myself a standard 1900 cooler will be sufficient + i have a twin fan setup for extra cooling should it be required. see what other people say.

If you have an oil cooler around and are doing a 1.6 to 1.9 conversion then you may as well fit it. However I don't run one on my CTI turbo and have never struggled with oil temps, but then again I don't rev it that high. The only time I have really seen the gauge move has been on red hot days or at Cadwell after a fair few laps. For sprinting I doubt your oil temp will be getting that high anyway.

how big is the standard 1900 unit then in comparison and roughly how much would they be new??

My cars going to be running a higher camshaft and will get revved a fair bit as it's just for sunday drives and ring trips like so would that still be enough

Reading the last page it was said maybe a 13 or 16 row may be better on it???

I was in the same position and rang Andy Baker at AB Motoersport and he said fit a mocal 13 row oil cooler and not to bother with buying a standard 1.9 as there crap in comparison.13 row fit with no modification he said 16 row need it.

So bought 13 row Mocal with braided hoses and built in thermostat, not fit it yet though

They do need a little modification, not that difficult though.

mocal 13 row is like £130 a used standard 1900 cooler is what £10? :) like henry said mine is gonna be used for occasional track day and sprinting so i think it'll be fine ;)

In this country, for mainly road use, I wouldn't bother with one.

The 1.6 doesn't have one as standard, and I'm sure people thrash the s*it out them. I did. :)

+1, Semi-standard 8v's are generally fine without one IMO, you'll find that most standard 1.9 ones are actually doing next to sweet FA anyway.

Agreed, I wouldn't bother fitting the standard 1.9 air/oil cooler - it's miniscule and I doubt it's all that effective or necessary. Do without one; if you find your temps are high then skip the OE part and go straight to a 13 row cooler (or bigger, depending on engine tune and main use).

I don't know how different the 1.9s are but i have barely ever seen my temperature needle move above the third mark on the gauge.

obviously track days and racing would be different.

My Mi16 would get to about 105 degrees on the 'ring on a hot day, that was with the standard oil warmer (oil to water).

I haven't seen over 85 degrees with my 16 row yet in the same circumstances.
