Riveting On Doorcards

Recommended Posts

Silky

I've done away with the standard doorcards, fitted manual window regulators and now want to fit some carbon style doorcards.

At the moment they dont have any holes for rivets etc, so basically I want to use the easiest method of securing them on.

Is it best to use rivets, or self tap-in screws or some other method ?

Any ideas welcomed

As you have a working window I would use screws.

So would you drill tiny holes into the doorcard and into the metal door itself for the screw to go through rather than trying to screw thru the card and door in one go

For ultimate tart appeal, use rivnuts in the door and some nice button allen head screws

That would be the way to do it.

Basically a threaded rivet, you then use the internal thread in the rivnut to bolt whatever you want to it or them.

I love them but they may not sit flush some could leave you with a small gap along the edge of your door cards, if that worries you

what Oli said, Laser do a Rivnut gun set with 3-4-5 and6mm mandrels and a few rivnuts, most motorfactors and many fasteners suppliers sell them, or ebay :)

I like the sound of them, not sitting flush is ok as long as it is secure

Cheers for the help lads

Will I need to drill holes in the door itself or will the rivnut gun go through the metal ?

I take it I will definitely need to drill the doorcard itself

The riv-nuts work exactly like pop rivets so you have to drill the correct sized hole in the door, you then insert the riv-nut and sqeeze the gun to fix it in place. you then drill the door card in the correct place and screw in the bolt.

If you want it to fit flush, depending how thick your door cards are, you could countersink them into the back of the card with a large enough drill bit.

oz.

You need to do the same as you would with a standard rivet drill hole in the doorcard big enough for your bolt and a hole in the door big enough for the rivnut to fit in.
