Are The Strut Towers Used As Grounding Points?

Recommended Posts

As title. I seem to remember seeing a wire connected to one of the towers when I scrapped my original GTI. Is my memory right? Are the towers used as grounding points? If so, for what? I don't see any wires on my current loom which aren't connected.

Additionally, a reason I'm asking is a friend suggested that I added a grounding point to help with an electrical issue I'm having. Was wondering if I could use the little tabs on the towers as grounding points.

Any part of the chassis can be used as a grounding point really.

they are the earth wires for the brake pad warning circuit.

attaching an earth to the top of the strut wont work particularly well, as they are quite well insulated by the nylon cups in the track rods and droplinks and the rubber bushes in the wishbones, and the top mount rubber donut.

unless you have steel braided brake lines of course.

the connectors are for the brake pad warning light wiring

the sensor which pokes into the brake pad has electricity flowing to it, when the pad wears down sufficiently the sensor touches the disc which is connected to the hub/strut etc the wire at the top of the strut you mentioned connects it to earth/chassis so that it completes the circuit.

The tab itself isn't grounded it's so that it can be grounded/earthed

Thanks all. Will continue to think of other possible points to use. Can I really just run a wire from, oh say, the metal casing of the alternator, to a grounding point to act as an additional earth?

Yeah B)

Can have as many earth wires as you want.

Big thick wire, and if your putting it onto a painted surface clean off the paint under connector :)
