Newbie With Engine Issuses

I have just bought a 1.9 after defecting from fords, so ive done what most people do when you get a car service and check everything. Any way there was a bit of the old white stuff in the oil cap after running it for a while( none when i checked the car). Also the tappets seem to have got louder and when you remove the dipstick or the oil cap when its running it seems to be breathing a bit heavy.

 

As I say i have only had fords before and pugs are a bit foriegn to me, and help or advice would be great.

Mayo in the filler is normal and a common query:

A bit of breathing is expected and also normal, but do check for perished pipes and air leaks. If it's obviously not right, then excessive crank case pressure could indicate worn rings.

 

If the tappets have become louder since the service, what grade oil did you use?

 

Although it's all down to how well it's been maintained throughout it's life, what's the current mileage?

The engine has done 110k i had not changed the oil, i was running the engine to running temp to check everything was ok prior to changing the oil.

I have now removed all the breather pipes and they are coted in the white stuff.

I also removed the dizzy and again loads of the white stuff again, so i have bitten the bullet and started to strip the engine for a head gasket and liner seals. I was also thinking of replacing the rings and having the liners honed.

 

What type of tappets do these engines have in them and is there anything else that would be worth doing while its stripped?

 

Also can you recomend a place to get the parts for this car as all my local autofactor are pretty crap when it comes to this model.
