Boiling Over

Recommended Posts

Obey_R

My 1.6 has been boiling over recently. It's not on the road, just as it was ran recently for the MOT I was made aware. There has been brown water coming over the top of the expansion tank but it's not running too hot on the gauge...

There has been a lot of head work done to it in 2005 so I'm sure it's nothing there but what could be the causes of it?

I'm still learning so sorry if it's something blindingly obvious.

Ross.

Thermostat?

Ignore the gauges - they are for decoration.

Depending in how long it was running for, i would check to see if the engine cooling fan is working aswell

If it's definately not overheating, then check/replace the expansion tank cap.

More likely that the cooling fans aren't working properly if it's only when the car is stationary, which is a pretty common issue, usually down to faulty thermoswitches and corroded connectors on the fan loom.

I had those problems on my 1900, replaced tank cap and found the fans not running. Since its a rally car i rewired to a manual switch with a relay and its not over heated on the last 4 events. I only use the fans when waiting at stage starts.
