How Do I Tell If My Gearbox Is For A 1.6 Or A 1.9?

im hopefully going to be converting my car back to a 1.6 but i wanted to make sure if ive still got a 1.6 gearbox,

 

so i was wondering, how do i tell the difference? eg is there a code anywhere?

No code etc, but if you remove the diff cover the amount of teeth on the CW&P is written. And you should be able to roughly judge it from speeds at different RPM etc. In fifth gear, 1.9 is roughly 80mph at 4k, and 1.6 is at 5k at 80. (iirc!)

59 / 16 = 3,6875 (1.9)

65 / 16 = 4,0625 (1.6)

 

I think these figures are correct.

What about Mi box then?

 

Ive got two gearboxes sat in my garage that i paid very little for, and both were sold as suspected Mi boxes

 

Are there any ways to tell? Or if i have to strip them what am i looking for on the diff?

The tooth combinations are normally stamped on the crownwheel on the flat section, arent they? "65x16" etc...

Yes, they should be.

 

65 x 16 is the 1.6 / 4.063 fd as mentioned above, the Mi16 4.43 FD should be stamped 62 x 14.
