i have recently bought my first 205 gti 1.6 and thought it felt a bit sluggish. i had a look at the very recent mot emmisions read out and the c0 is reading 0.31 seems a bit low. what should it be running at??

Yes that is lean, will be sacrificing top end quite a lot, i've always set them between 1.5-2.00, setup up countless cars using those settings and they've always been spot on. Worth checking your HC also, around the 200 mark is where it should be, the higher the value the higher amount of unburnt fuel there is, if the value is high, it suggests the car needs a service, plugs, leads etc

Hmmm.

I've just had an MOT and the analyser says that I'm running at 0.24% which is obviously lower than the OP.

However HC is 190ppm which is spot on.

Any suggestions? The engine is pretty spot on I reckon but could do with a touch more top end maybe, worth a fiddle or leave it as is?

Find a friendly garage with a Co2 tester and have a fiddle! Mine's lost a bit of top end and I now have to nurse the tick-over for a few seconds since I set it to just below 1%. After reading this thread, I may give it a quarter turn on the AFM screw.

The mixture at idle (assuming you've adjusted it properly with the idle mixture adjustment screw) will make sod-all difference to mixture at top end. All that screw does on Jetronic is allow a tiny amount of air to bypass the AFM metering flap, and that amount of air is insignificant compared to the amount of air the engine will consume under load :D

I generally set 205 GTi's up at around 1.0-1.5% CO if I've an analyser to hand, but more often than not, I just set them up by ear and how they are happiest idling which is often leaner than that. If it starts and idles well, I'd not worry in the slightest if it's a touch on the lean side at idle.
