Coolant Pipe Routing Avoiding The Sad?

Recommended Posts

kate205gti

it seems ive got a later 8v engine that doesnt have the coolant temp sensor housing shown here under the sad:

instead my ECU temp sensor plug is round the back of the head with the spade sensors which is fine, and the sad is bolted on on its own, only because i dont have this housing i've got nothing to plum the coolant hose from the top right of the header tank into? the haynes books say ive either got to plug it into this housing, or into somewhere on top right of the head - but ive got no other places that need a hose  do i just blank it off? or where is it supposed to route to on a later engine please? :)

thankyou :o

Good Morning.

I've been out to look at my own (it is a 88' engine) and the pipe from the top right of the header tank (that is if your looking at the engine from the front) is going into the top of the thermostate.

I've plumped mine up to this diagram which pugtorque sent my way when i was asking about jubalee clip sizes

I could go and get a pic of mine if you want? sorry i'm not the best at explaining things and i havn't had my morning coffee yet

ahh thats a great help thankyou - but i've only got one hole in my thermostat housing (out the side) so would have nowhere to plug the pipe coming from the heater matrix into :)

yes please if you can get some pics that would be a great help, i'll take some of mine too and try and match them up! cheers :o

I've marked the top right (blue) and bottom heater matrix pipe (green) I take it your missing where the blue pipe is plumbed?

EDIT: bollocks, sorry its upside down

ooh thats interesting - there is a pipe off the top of my thermostat - but it goes to the bottom of my throttle body ;) there is a pipe next to it that has no home - so maybe thats the one

i dont have the coolant sensor housing you have pictured there as i think ive got a later engine?

at the moment ive got 6 holes to fill and im not sure which ones to link up?

im guessing looking at that 8v coolant pipe diagram its 1 and 5, 2 and 4, 3 and 6? although the pipes off the throttle body arent in that pic ;) can anyone confirm for def please?

Ah i've not plumbed in the throttle housing as i've read its not needed, something to do with emissions iirc? (hope some one can verify) but mine is an old engine.

The pipe that sticks out to the left on the first pic is going back to the sad housing then out the back and along to the bottom heater matrix pipe

To answer my own question on the throttle housing its not emissions its to do with cold start in colder countries and thus not needed here.

It can be bypassed and it wont affect anything, this is what i'm reading anyway

Thats the top radiator hose,on the later engines the oil filter housing is remote and down by the gearbox, its water cooled and thats were the two hoses off the top hose go.

To answer your earlier question, all you need is a later heater matrix hose, this goes from the matrix round the side to the side of the head where you don't have anything atached.

I'm nearly sure thats to do with the oil plumbing, I think the oil filler bottle thingy goes on the right of that pipe and the pipe on the left to the sump or bottom of block, the two in the middle i cant quite see where they go on my own.

Baz

Do away with the extra housing for the sensors as your engine from Ant is a later one having the sensors in the thermostat housing as i said yesterday, and run a late-type pipe from the bulkhead to the outlet on the side of the thermostat housing, or join the older style pipe and the small 90d elbow that the earlier style would use with a small length of hard pipe.

That pic of the top hose as Matt says is for a later car with heat exchanger like 309's etc, if you're not running the heat exchanger under the oil filter, you need a normal style single hose with no extra outlets.

what baz said, but if you have one I'd be tempted to use it s it makes filter changes a doddle and warms the engine up quicker
