Cannot Open Bonnet! Coolant Light Flickering On....

Recommended Posts

I bought the car a month ago and when viewining the car, I asked the lad to open the bonnet so I could have a look aroind the bay to check for rust and check all the fluids etc etc.

When giving the car its first clean I tried to open the bonnet to do the engine, but when I pulled the catch (by the passengers leg) it did not seem to do nothing? Well last night going around a roundabout a red light came flickering on, which it kept doing on left hand corners. I assume this is the coolant light? Its under the battery light on the gauge.

This has got me worried! Now either I am being stupid not opening the bonnet or is there a problem or a knack to do it? Also what is the black tank in the boot? Sorry for what could be a stupid post but I do not want to drive the car to halfords to buy a haynes manaul, if what I think could be a lack of coolant.

Thanks

Are you pulling the bonnet release lever far enough? It may be quite stiff. If you are and it's doing nothing, it could be a snapped cable (in which case you'll have no resistance when pulling the lever) or a sticky catch.

What does the flickering light look like? Is it some horizontal squiggly lines with a box like shape above (I'm describing this from memory)? As long as it's not the STOP light, then it's in the right place on the cluster to be the low coolant warning light.

The black tank in the boot is your rear washer bottle.

Whilst you are at Halfords buy a can of white spray grease and lubricate your bonnet latch so it opens easily next time :D
