Can I Remove Diff, Without Removing Gearbox?

Recommended Posts

dimmapalmer

Hi there.

Just wondering if it is possible to remove my diff without having to remove the whole box?

Was thinking of undoing some mounts so i can make myself some space to get the case off, just wondering if i will be able to get enough?

Cheers

Palmer

I've not tried this, but I reckon the way to do it would be to drop the front subframe down- disconnect lower column joint, drop the lower balljoints, rear engine mount, then 6 bolts and the subframe will lower down out of the way.

well i did it.

removed bottom arms (was replacing anyway)

disconnected gear linkages and steering rack from sub frame, then lowered the sub frame.

give you loads of room to switch diffs (and grind inside if the diff is slightly too big :D )

attacked some corners and OH MY GOD. could out handle anything i reckon.

thanks again for the advice.

There is no need to drop the subframe...just undo the bottom engine mount and use a std 205 scew jack between the sump and subframe to rotate the engine. You can now do all the work you need to.

I've now got a diff change down to a 30min job when i'm in a rush!

I've done this a couple of times, as above, you dont need to drop the subframe, just undo the bottom engine mount and lever the engine away from the subframe to get enough clearance to get the diff in and out, not the best job in the world but not too difficult. Dropping the subframe would make life easier, so if you have plenty of time to play with then this may be a better option, but it can be done np without.
