1.9 / 1.6 Hybrid Engine

Recommended Posts

due to having a mass of spare engine parts, i've decided to take a bit of time to make a myself a fresh engine that i will eventually put in my laser green

i was going to keep it standard, but dont think it would do it any harm having a 1.9 engine dropped in with a few tweeks here and there wink.gif

so, at my disposal i have

2 x 1.9 engines (both from 1990 cars)

1 x 1.6 engine that i think was from a 1990 aswell

and my 1.6 engine thats in my car now, apparently blink.gif its got a reground 285 cam in it

anyway, after my initial thread regarding this sort of build it turns out that it used to be quite a common thing to do in motorsport

so, i will be stripping the 3 engines and doing some measuring to find which parts are the closest to the standard engine sizes (eg, head, block, weighing pistons etc etc) then using the best bits to build a slightly improved engine

it will basically be a 1.9 with 1.6 pistons to raise the compression

head will be ported, polished and havea pt27 cam

then probably use a set of carbs as i've been told the standard injection wont be good enough ??? so maybe mapable ingnition

i will be getting a second set of 1.6 pistons and using the 4 that are the closest in weight

the pistons will be fitted to the 1.9 rods (not by me ph34r.gif )

the rest of the parts will be checked over by the same company that will be sorting the pistons

i will also be fitting an alloy trapdoor sump from an s16 engine

gearing wise i will be using a 1.6 flywheel as its lighter and a standard 1.6 box

sounds good, one small detail I'd add, if you plan on getting management then it'd be an idea to get hold of an XU7 (or late 1.9 Motronic) flywheel, same clutch as the 1.6/1.9 but has the timing teeth for a standard fit TDC sensor :)

it is lighter than the 1.9 flywheel, marginally heavier than the 1.6, that could be addressed when it gets balanced if required.

i recently purchased a ported and polished head with a pt27 cam and triple valve seats, this is now complete and waiting for the bottom end to be built.

i've been told this wont run on standard ignition and will need carbs (45s) :) is this true?

would it run on bike carbs? is anybody else running this setup?

I cant think of a reason why it wont run on the standard injection system. If you find it lacking you could use a slightly bigger injector but as far as goes it's abbility to fuel it should work fine across the range really.

The ignition is another matter and having fully mapped ignition will reap rewards but you could still use the standard setup.

those were my initial thoughts as well, but i got told it wont work and not given a reason why :)

i'll be running 1.9 injectors, ecu and afm (think thats the same as the 1.6 anyway) but may have access to some s16 injectors

It will not work well due to the high overlap of the cam causing reversion which will confuse the hell out of the airflow meter, throw the fuelling about all over the place, and generally make it run like s*it. Plus the fact that you will have no way of accurately upping the fuel supply to make use of the cam.

Or one of Rich_w lightened gti6 flywheels if funds permit? Cant wait to see this built Pete and more to the point go out for a blast :D

it is quite a lairy cam, echoing tom's comments I doubt it'll work on an AFM injection system, 285 PTS cam was bad enough.

spec here; http://forum.205gtidrivers.com/index.php?showtopic=92198

pair of 45's and a re-curved dizzy from H+H would be the cheapest option that'll work successfully to a budget , as long as you obtain a decent set of carbs.

Yes,I must appologise.I showed my ignorance of Pugeot cam profiles there gents. After reading Tom's and Welsh's comments I looked at the cam profile specifications and I agree with you Tom.To much reversion.Afm wont like it.

All the best
