Caliper/brake Disc Thickness Question

Recommended Posts

locosaki

I got given a set of 4 pot calipers and I want to see if I can use them on my 205,They are radial mount so that shouldn't be a problem installing them to the hub.

Anyway my query is,

The calipers are for a 8/10mm solid disc,The cut out in the caliper for the discs rotating in is 29mm wide so this leaves 9.5mm clearance either side of the disc.

Does there have to be such a large clearance between disc and caliper ?

I was trying to work out if I can use a 20mm thick disc on these so that leaves 4.5mm clearance each side of the disc,I think it should work if the pad thickness is around 12mm from new as I took these measurements with pads with 9mm life in them.

I hope this sounds possible as every other brake kit seems to use larger heavier discs,I was hoping to get away with the 266x20 brake disc.

Can anyone see any problems that I have missed or not given a though about ??

seeing as the brake backing material is about 4-5mm thick, you wont have any space for the friction material with a 20mm thick disc.

I've done some more research and the brake pads new are 14.3mm.

What I'm not clear on,Doe's this 14.3mm include the backing plate also ?
