Metal Coolant Pipe

Recommended Posts

rescue dude

I need to replace the metal coolant pipe, the one that joins the two rubber pipes that sits in front of the bottom pulley.

I've seen someone selling ally one's somewhere but i'm buggered if I can find the ad.

Any idea's where I can get one?

I've always just used the standard plated steel pipe in that location. But if you desperately want an alloy one I could make you one.

Not desperate for an ally one just that i've seen somewhere selling them.

Any idea of the part number of the oe one? That's if they are still available?

They are certainly still available, slightly cheaper to buy from your local dealer and not ebay as the ebay merchants just tack a few quid on to the dealer price. However if you don't mind paying a couple of quid for the convenience of it landing on your doorstep in a few days time you could just get one from ebay.

Such as this one- http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PEUGEOT-205-GTI-309-...=item335c1e0e14

Main stealer price was £14 plus vat so pretty much the same as e-gay but at least I know it's an oe part.

Thank's for your help.

Still wondering where I saw those ally one's?

I got lucky with one from my main dealer, they still had one on the shelf and as it was dead stock I got it for a quid. This was only last month!

I got a few other bits too!

Full price is about 12 quid plus the VAT I think.

if you used a copper pipe will it upset the positive ions in the water with the alloy and cause corrosion, ive read it on the ause site about copper head gasket's or is just if it is in contact with the block ?

You can get this pipe from GSF also, about the same price I think.

Bit like the reaction between copper and galv or lead then!

For galvanic corrosion the metals have to be in 'intimate' contact :P, hence the issues with copper gaskets needing to be removed after a short period . Copper pipe should be fine, I think a lot of guys have used them for t-pieces in their coolant system.

I fitted a new standard one 2 years ago but decided to give it a few coats of etch primer and matt black to try and reduce the effects of external corrosion and so far seems to be holding up ok.

Didn't somebody use a metal pipe from a vacume cleaner hose to good effect, or am I getting confused?

Thinking about it, on the orange car we ditched the metal pipe and just used one length of flexi silicone hose and just held it away from the fan belt with a couple of cable ties.

Wonder if you could use a lenght of plastic drain pipe?

The grey stuff that's got a wall thickness of about 3mm?

You could put in a bucket with some boiling water to see what happens. I'd think the big issue would be stopping the clamps slipping of the end of the pipe.

plastic may also crack and split quite easy, especially if hit with stones from the road.

I'll be honest- why re-invent the wheel? I'll happily spend £14 every 15 years to replace that pipe when it needs it, with something that will fit straight on with no bother!
