Shot Blasting

My 205 has been parked up over the winter, when I say parked up, I mean abandoned outdoors :)

 

looking underneath it there is a lot of surface rust appearing everywhere so its in need of some tlc.

 

with no garage, is it possible to shot blast underneath it? or is it something that should be done inside?, any tips or suggestions would be much appreciated

you can do shot blasting outside although it would be advisable to do it in some sort of tent/gazebo as the sand will go everywhere! you'll also need some proper breathing equipment as you don't want the dust getting in your lungs!

 

However the main stumbling block is going to be getting your hands on a compressor man enough to do the job! you'll need something like a diesel road works compressor to do the underside of the car, (plus you'll need to roll the car onto its side really or have it in a jig to do it properly. You'd also need a pressure pot for feeding the media into the gun.

 

And to top it off you'll need to spray the shot blasted steel pretty much straight away with a good etch primer otherwise it will flash over with rust in a matter of hours as its super sensitive post blasting.

 

Basically it can be done but you need to have the right equipment and be well prepared!

 

The easier option would be to get several twisted knotted brushes on an angle grinder and do it by hand, it's a bit slower and more labour intensive, but a hell of a lot cheaper/easier than having the whole blasting setup. Plus you can do it in sections ie clean up a section, treat it with kurust or the like, giving it a final going over and then primer it.

I was expecting that kinda answer m@tt, I guess ill go for plan b, wire brush it makes more sense with lack of equipment.

I unbolted every thing on the underside and got under there with a air tool with different wire brushes, then I got seam sealent to sort out what peugeot for got to do and then I moved onto spray on stone chip, which I brought the proper gun to spray it on. I tryed not to go back to bare metal and just prep the surface for the new stone chip to stick to the old stuff but you will be in shock how tite peugeot was with underseal and sealent.

 

Sorry if this is abit basic.

Just to hijack. I'm just about to undergo the same on my 205, I don't have room or money for a compressor. The whole car has been stripped in and out, (literally everything!) And so I'm now ready to tackle the underside. I was going to get it blasted but it means putting the axels back on and finding transport to get it there. I was recommended to scrape the worst of the stonechip off with a chisel and then use a grinder with brush attachments to finish off, then krust and etch prime. Is this going to be too much work with a grinder and brush attachments? The only bit I'm struggling to get my head round I guess is the amount of work and how to finish it correctly. Obviously Scrape and brush first, then treat the rust! do i then prime or seam seal first then prime followed by stonechip???
