Fuel Hose Inside Car

Hi there, I am moving my brake and fuel hoses to inside the car. I have however heard that the fuel line cannot be rubber or braided hose because of it leaking vapours. I plan to use mostly copper pipe (is 1/4" big enough?) but will need some flexible pipe to connect it to the pump outlets. What should I be using?

 

Its a standard gti pump and tank

odd ?? i have all the hose here for running my fuel lines inside the car they are braided rubber, where did you hear this?

I assume from your title that you either already rally or are intending to in the future.

 

If so, correct no plain rubber hoses through the car, they must have a metal overbraid. Some people will say that you can smell vapours from the metal over rubber pipe. I've run this in one of my cars before and had a 1 gallon tank in a sealed box in the car and can honestly say I have never smelt fuel vapours. Perhaps the quality of the pipe makes a difference??

 

On my other car I now have 8mm copper fuel lines (standard size for lpg conversions) as does my mate who runs them in his rally car. The connections to the fuel tank is with normal high pressure rubber hose but kept sealed just behind the metalwork so no connection are in the car.

oh so its only really for proffesional use.

 

if i was to use copper then how to you go about making the connections to the fuel pump end?

Thanks thats perfect :D will use some 8mm copper pipe with some stainless overbraided hose from the pump to the copper pipe.

If you go for overbraid hose to run inside the car make sure you use PTFE lined hoses, this will stop the vapour leaking inside the cabin.

I can vouch for the fact that rubber lines will leak fuel vapour, my car stank with internal rubber lines.

Judging from above replies it's the ptfe lind hose that is making the difference, which I can only assume I have in one of my cars.

what have you guys used for penetrating the bulkhead etc and what route is best?

 

electrical stuffing glands spring to mind ?

That was my idea exactly. Failing that im sure there are through bulkhead LPG fittings.
