1.4 Spi Gtx To V6--- Whats Needed/needs Changing?

Recommended Posts

dave_6785

I was looking at upgrading the engine in my 1.1 for a while but sold that and bought a 1.4spi gtx, I was thinking of a 1.9gti/mi16 conversion initially but i've decided to go for the V6 instead. The thought of a none gti looking 205 v6 is exactly what i want to do now, hopefully completed by the summer. What on the car needs changing to gti spec and what would i need to run the V6?? Cant sem to find any Tu-v6 conversion topics that explain this.

You will be lucky to do it by summer mate, it's not a quick conversion :)

not that much actually stays GTI specific, but you need to find a gti subframe to modify, 1.9 hubs, probably a gti tank and fuel pump, not sure how suitable the spi bits are.

rear beam and front suspension definitely needs uprating, brakes etc.

apart from those, its pretty much all specific to the V6 conversion, i.e wiring loom, engine mounting, driveshafts, whatever radiator and cooling pipes you want to run,

The 1.1 is a gonner now lol. i knew at the lakes it was a send off tour for it, the gtx handles better, accelerates remarkably quicker than the 1.1. I've gotta say though the 1.1 put a bigger smile on my face than the gtx does. the gtx is more comfy and user friendly which i wanna change, i want the 1.1 smile but in this car. Started playing around with stripping and re fitting bits just to get used to working on 205's, i've started looking at renting a lock up/garage, buying a gti shell/spares-repairs with good body and stripping it for parts for this one. I liked the fact that the 1.1 looked like a gti and flew faster than a 1.1 should (somehow :) ). People look at this gtx and say, naaa its not a gti, its slow, with the v6 under the bonnet and some of the engine stuff (battery etc...) in the boot to balance weight would be a good little motor. I want reliable power and i believe the v6's are pretty much bulletproof.

Right, i shall endeavour to answer that as accurately as possible.

Yes of course it has a heavier nose, it is heavier and that is unavoidable, but it was never a Gti, it was a 1.9 low comp automatic Gentry and that was also nothing like a Gti.

I never wanted a Gti or a Gti 'feel', i loved my Gentry and just wanted a faster one to keep up with and at times embarrass modern cars. I now have that.

As you witnessed first hand on the Lakes tour, as you were directly behind me for a fair few miles, it keeps up with anything and it can at times leave behind most things, but it still isn't a Gti or pretending to be. It is a 205 that is fast, very fast.

You had a 1.1 that was kitted up with all the Gti 'visual' gear and you will know as well as me that it may have looked similar but it drove nothing like a Gti. The Gtx you now have will also be a faster car than the 1.1 but still nothing like a Gti.

So basically if you want a Gti with Gti feel, handling, acceleration etc etc, you have only two choices, a 1.6 or a 1.9.

BUT, if you want an Mi or a Gti6 variant, you still wont have a 205 Gti.

As a simple answer after 3,000 miles in my Gentry v6, i would say that you would prefer a 205 Gtx with the Gti6 conversion. I say that because i think you are wanting a Gti-esque feel at the end of it. Plus you can do it a lot quicker than a v6 conversion.

I have what i want which is a great cruiser that handles and drives like a Gentry with Gti,Gti6 and v6 parts, and thats because that's what it is.

Its not the 'gti' i want with this car, It has gti style seats but velour and comfy as hell, i've 1.9gti alloys but thats cuz they look good on all 205s, with the 1.1 i loved the image of it, gti everything visually, this gtx i want to go a different route, there wont be any red carpets and gti seats, no badges on the boot or steering wheel saying anything other than what it is. No gti arches or door trim. Ye i loved the 1.1 because of how it looked and how fun it is to drive. This car visually is gunna stay as is. And the engine is pokey (compared to the 1.1 anyway lol). I want fun on the 70 miles of country lanes between my barracks and home, but i also want a comfortable ride along the motorway for the random journeys around the country i end up going on, i want reliability and half decent fuel economy from a 205 as it'll be used daily for a 30 mile a day trip to work. I know in my mind a 1.6 wouldnt be enough, if i had the 1.9gti engine i'd be wishing i put in a mi16, the mi16 doesnt have the best reputation when it comes to reliability so deep down i know for what i want my choices are either the gti-6 or the V6 engine.

Correct me if i'm wrong but the gti-6 seems like an engine i'd want to make the most of 24/7, the V6 is something that can be used if and when neccesary
