205 Gti Series 1 Keeps On Turning Off

Recommended Posts

Guest Newsky

Hey guys,

So my 205 GTi recently developed this problem where after about 20-30 minutes of running, the car just turns off and refuses to turn back on again.

When the car doesn't want to turn back on again, it kicks and revs very low (around 500rpm) and then turns off shortly after.

Any help on the problem will be appreciated ;)

Thanks,

Check/replace ignition amplifier and fuel pump relay (with some ,known good, spares) for test and see if it sorts out afterwards ..

But we'll need some more detail description regarding this issue ;) :

- does this happening during the driving or @ idle while standing still ?

- is the problem heat related , i.e. it's fine when the engine is cold but starts playing when the engine reaches operating temp. ?

- how does it perform during the driving ? does it misfire , can you feel lack of power , hesitation or uneven running ..

- etc.

Where abouts is the ignition amplifier and the fuel pump relay, is that where the tachometric relay is? Also this might sound stupid but how will I go about testing it?

About the issue, the car turns off after 20 minutes in both situation, either if its being driving or just in idle. I think the problem is heat related, and when its driving it performs fine, just when its about to turn off it rev's really low for about 1 second and turns off.

Thanks

The Ign Amplifier is on the RH side of the engine bay (as you look into it) behind the coil (covered by a black cover which you need to lift off), but you'll need to loosen off the coil to access the small screws/nuts etc for the amplifier. When mine played up it was a mix of this and the coil, so I replaced both.
