Sorry to post this, I was giving a mate a hand yesterday we had a go at getting the rev counter working but we could not. The car is a base modle that did not have a rev counter i think the clocks are out of a gear.

Now, we only had 3 wires for the plug on the rev counter and 1 of them is the live for the lights, 1 is the earth for the lights the other ???? 12v feed it looks like its from the + side of the coil. I think I should say its a Xflow on points.

So what do we need? We have 3 conectors on the back of the clock.

1: +12v

2: 0v

3: pulse. From what?

Thanks.

Tom Fenton

Pulse comes from the negative side of the ign coil and uses the transient voltage spikes created by the points opening and closing to give a signal to the rev counter.

A random thought as I've really no idea, but are you sure one of them's earth or does it earth through the body?

When we converted an Escort 1.1L and a Sunbeam 1.3GL into RS2000 and Lotus Sunbeam replicas respectively, neither had rev counters and we put the dials in from an Escort 1.6 Ghia and a Sunbeam 1.6ti, both done by my brother who has had no special training car wise.

So i know it is possible, but it was over 20 yrs ago so i can't remember how it was done. Been bed too many times since.

But it's not impossible is my point.

99%. As one of the connectors is common to the back lights on the instrument cluster. So ether the rev counter only works when the lights are on or is a common earth.
