Citroen Zx Operating Temperature

Recommended Posts

I have bypassed the heater matrix as the car emptied its coolant fluid onto the floor. This has gone to plan and water is coming out the bleed valve but I have a concern before I try to drive it.

The radiator is stone cold and I am worried that there is lots of air in it (I have filled the water to the max level)

I have only let the engine temp get to 80 degrees on the guage, but I have never taken note of the operating temp to know at what temp the thermostat opens or when the fans come on.

Does the radiator bleed separately to the rest of the system? There is a little screw cap type bit above the thermostat

Can anyone help?

there should be a bleed point at the opposite end of the rad to the expansion tank.

thermostat is the same as a 2.0 MI16, 89 degrees, screw cap? I know there's usually a brass allen headed hollow bleed screw in the top of the thermostat cap/top hose takeoff.

Single speed - single fan on these usually, 97 degrees on 92 off, or 101/96-97/92DEG if its two speed but that is rare I believe, no aircon has it?

They often do take quite some time to warm up when stationary, not sure how well they bleed however as I never did anything to the cooling system on mine before I fitted a different engine.

Got scans of the relevant pages for the heater matrix swap if you need them :P

nice one. I have an electronic version of the haynes but I left my laptop at home..

The bit I looked at was more like a black plastic cap but I will hunt this allen headed bleed screw and get the air out

Will report back!

This is what I have.

Cannot see any allen key type bleed screw so I guess this is the equivalent of...

in the end I stopped being a wuss and turned it with some mole grips and it came undone so I was able to bleed the radiator.

Been for an extended 2 hr test drive and at 60mph constant speed water temp is about 89 deg. oil at 80 deg.

At 80mph its about 90 deg. water and 85deg. oil.

Seems if you accelerate hard you can get the water heading for 95-100 degrees but it rapidly cools once crusing.

I think the system is fully bled but with the lower water capacity the water system will run a little hotter.

I added coolant to it too which going by the smell of the old water that gushed out the heater matrix it has not had any for a while!

Now I can get down to soaking up all the water as ducks keep banging at the window wanting a swim

P.S. It had a full service less than 6 months ago, including new coolant. Perhaps you just have a sensitive nose, or like you say, it just needed it. Thanks Kev - North terminal mate Friday 16th. Hoon city. Can drop you off at Aylesbury, or your Dad's would be more convenient.
