Help Fitting A Fuel Swirl Pot Please...

Recommended Posts

eafertynyne

Hi guys,

I have a trackday 205 GTI-6 and after 3 years I have finally decided to rectify my fuel surge issues rather than driving around with a full tank. I’m going down the swirl pot route, which I’m going to locate behind the driver’s seat to simplify installation.

I can’t ‘do’ maintaining cars, so my plan is to hand it over to someone who does, together with a box of parts and this is where my problem lies. After doing a search (honest), I now have a rough idea, but not sure exactly what I need to buy.

So, has anyone got a list of all the parts I need to gather, together with lengths of fuel hose. I’m also looking at replacing all the fuel hoses under the bonnet at the same time, utilising the standard 8v fuel filter. Is this feasible/advisable?

Also, where’s the best (read cheapest) place to buy the parts and (with fingers crossed) is there anyone in Norwich that could fit this for me? The garages I’ve spoken to don’t really fill me with confidence.

Thanks one and all.

I wouldn't put the swirl pot in the cabin, if you ever decide to do any competitions the scrutineers will screw you to the wall for it. Think about it, you'll have a big pot of flamable liquid right behind your arse and if it goes up you're going to blow your ass off!

Tru dat ;) The regulations over here in Aus require that it must be contained in a metal box. I'm in the process of fitting one to my tarmac rally car (stripped out) and am mounting it just behind where the front mounts for the rear beam are. I bought a 1.5L pot and Bosch 044 fuel pump from eBay quite cheaply. The pot has 3 AN6 bungs and one AN8 fitting. I will rig it up so the fuel is pumped from the original tank pump to the pot and have a return line from the pot back through the tank pump (taking care of 2 of the AN6 bungs). The big AN8 from the pot feeds the 044 pump which pumps to the rail, and the original rail return goes back to the pot.

Make a point of using braided teflon hose- it won't give you a headspin from the fumes! I couldn't afford the Earls stuff (5m at $58/m.....) so bought some from Torques on eBay

Hope this helps!

ive just finished doing mine, its basically on the bit where the rear seat would normally be, i did think about running fuel lines inside car and through bulk head but the best option was to use a smaller length of hose and go from fuel tank to pot, pot to standad metal pipes under car etc then if i had a prob etc i can just run pipe from standad fuel tank to metal pipes and be off!! eliminating swirl pot, i mounted a fse high pressure (and it has to be high pressure fro mi etc) fuel pump next to the pot and took the standad fuel pump feed wire and used it as a trigger for a relay that powers the new pump.

In all it works fine, and the big test will be the ring at the end of may but the odd time i have circled roundabouts with hardley and fuel it just keeps going!! i have some pics if you want. cheers ian

Oh, and you need

swirl pot, i got mine for about £40 posted e bay

fuel pump was £25 but should have been more!

relay, nothing, used a 205 green one!!

fuel hose was about £4 a meter. (depends on how you run hose= cost!!)

jubliee clips, wire, fuel...

i also used my standad fuel filter becasue if it works as standad, then surely it must be ok for this set up!!

Depends how much you want to spend and what type of spec you are ultimately looking for.

I woudl say you need to consider where you ultimately want to end up (seopc/use wise) as that will influence your set-up.

This is part of my fueling system I put in my Cavalier.

All JIC, all aeroquip.

That's a Bosch 044 pump.

The engine bay fueling compenents obviously complemented this.

I reckon I spent over £1k on it all up.

But that's way overkill for most.

However... thi si swhat I'm putting in the 205 now. lol.

I have a fuel pump and filter inside my rally car and to be legal its inclosed in a sealed metal box. As for fuel surge i have an alloy baffled tank out of an ex racing 205 which is about half the size of a standard one. This works well with out too much fuel in car. I agree i would not fancy a big pot of petrol right behind my bum.

;)

on the guy from 306gti who does the supercharger kits car he puts it under the rear beam where the spare wheel was. safest place to be.

Sorry to thread hijack................

What options are there to simply mount an alternative tank in the existing tank location, utilising the existing pump and sender?

Is anything available off the shelf?

Is fuel surge a common issue on 205's with sticky rubber boots?

Do you guys have some sort of baffling system that is able to be added to a non metal tank?

Would the latest foam type explosafe material baffle the tank somewhat?

i once fitted a ph1 fuel pump to my ph2. they are slightly different but interchangeable. i believe the ph2 tanks are slightly different to the phase 1. This combo used to make my mine splutter at almost every quick roundabout/tight bend at anything less than half a tank.

appart from that i never had any issues with the correct ph2 set up.

Has it got to be non metal, the half size on i use is made of alloy and has baffles built in so the pick up pipe is always surrounded by fuel. Mind you mine came from an ex racing pug and was exp second hand, it was i would guess very exp new. Also i would tank like that would have to be made to order
