Won't Start

Hi all,

Trying to cure the dreaded tickover issue I fitted a secondhand but tested afm to my 1.9 GTI.

I started it and it kicked in but died like it had no choke and I heard a bit of a pop. I tried to start it again and it won't fire at all despite taking the plugs out and cleaning, I also tried the old afm which the engine would run on before.

There is a spark but the engine will not run, I suspect there may be a fuel starvation issue but don't know why as it ran previously.

I note that when I turn the ignition on there is no noise from the fuel pump but I can't remember if it did this before.

Any help is appreciated.

If the fuel pump is suspect the first thing I would do is run a 12v feed straight to it (making sure it was well grounded also) to see if the pump runs and subsequently the car fires up.

Also is the AFM plug definitely connected back up properly?

If the pump is working, check you have not pushed one of the little wire terminals out of the AFM connector :D

Had this on mine, take the boot off the rear of connector and check all the wires are pushed in properly :)

Pump should prime when you turn ign on,then go off if you keep ignition on,then start pumping when you turn key to start position :D

Get someone to listen as you turn car over with back seat lifted and see if they can hear pump running

Refitted the plug to.p the afm and jiggled it about, left it overnight and hey presto it now works again.

Cheers Guys
