Gti 6 Bottom End/mi Head

Recommended Posts

locosaki

I'm looking at building a spare out of the parts I have sitting around.

I have a rebuilt GTI 6 bottom end with a rebuilt MI16 head,Will this combination work ?

What cams could I run ?

What compression figures would this give ?

Thanks in advance

I was hoping for something with higher lift/longer duration ?

I wouldn't use that combination myself, though I would gladly use the opposite one!

reasoning is the MI head and a gti6 bottom end will not have much valve clearance at all (also a small drop to the compression ratio)

however a gti6 head on an Mi16 bottom end will have a slightly higher than stock compression ration and pretty decent valve clearance.

If you have some money knocking around, then why not use the iron block; overbore it to 87 or 88mm; throw in forged pistons and a diesel XUD11 crank and have a 2.2L 16v powerhouse?

This'll cost about £3,500 all in with management and bodies, but will go like a f*cking rocket! :)

You could save nearly a grand and run it on a DTA (lower model) ECU with GTI6 inlet and it would still be a beast.

Now that does sound good. 2.2 16v

I want to use the iron block due to the fact of tolerances with conrods etc,Seems to be a little less prone to self distructing than the MI.

So the general opinion is this isn't a good way to go.I was trying to do this on a budget with the parts I have.

Surely there is the fact that the oil return on the Mi head is the only downfall of the Mi engine. The reason the gti6 is a good way to go 16v? (plus the fact a 2.2 16v would be LUSH!)

didnt think the mi16 head had oil return issues? certainly seen alot of very good spec engines running them over the gti6 head?

This certainly appears to be the case, and this thread probably shouldn't deteriorate into yet another oil starvation issue discussion.

I only say that because it's been covered in great detail in a recent thread (in the last week), where some very knowledgeable people (even some oldies) have gone into great detail about the causes of this issue on specifically the alloy block Mi16.

I learnt a lot, and the simple answer is it's the rods and not the head. So I would totally agree with DCC (Dan) on this and get the idea of the Mi head being the cause (or being worse than the GTI6 head) out of your head. (Damn - I've said 'head' too many times. :o )

I'm not sure of the title of the thread, but I seem to remember JeffR (from Australia) posting in there quite a bit and he doesn't normally, so if you look in his profile and find his posts you should be able to track it down. It's very interesting stuff, and is why I've just bought some Mi16 (XU9 - 83mm) pistons - {from eBay for £6.50 :D } - which I'm going to be matching to 8v rods on my forthcoming alloy block builds.

I have no fears using an Mi or S16 head, and with the PeterT recommended wet sump precautions I have (spacer - yes, even on an iron block - extended pick-up, uprated 6bar spring, pump baffle, GTI6 sump and windage tray) I have never had a problem.

And yes: a 2.2 Mi16 is a missile. God only knows what BlackMi16 and Maxi's cars are like at 2.3 and 2.4 respectively! ;)

EDIT: Found the topic.
