Best Way To Fit A New Windscreen

Recommended Posts

pugpete1108

i have searched but only came up with two posts about this.

i have been meaning to change the front screen on my pug and today i though i would have a bash at removing the old one. this didnt go too well and i shattered most of it trying to push it out.

no matter though as it was buggered anyway, i just dont want to break the new one trying to fit it.

i know that you use a bit of strong string in the seal and pull it round, but could anyone who has actually fitted one give me a few pointers please.

Pete

Sorry, no idea.

I once removed one from a mini, and put a nice big crack down it when refitting.

Not constructive, but hey ho!

Length of string, tie lots of knots in it and loads of fairy liquid! push down on the seals and pull the string out which pulls the seal in, works a treat.

There is not much more to it than that, once you have seen/done one it is quite straightforward. Push on the screen and pull the rope in, watch as the seal goes over the edge. give the seal and extra push to make sure it is fully in place.

Correct size of string will help (maybe ~8mm?? Dia.) just incase you were planing on using washing line or something.

I've managed It , parachute cord and plenty of lube (I used fairy liquid), I didn't break the screen but I did manage to put a few scratches in the roof (they buffed out but still worth mentioning), also where the seal folded it left very slight scrubbing marks.

It's defiantly doable, I just took my time and made sure I gave it plenty of lube. I,m planning on doing mine once its sprayed

EDIT: Didnt see the last two post so, what they said

It's really very simple.

Other than what's said, i'd only add, leave a couple of overlapped loops hanging out for you to grab/start again in a few places just in case the string pulls through without lipping the seal into the aperture.

It's alot easier with a second person to push (gently) on the seal/screen while another pulls the string from the inside too.

did mine yesterday, i used string on its own, no knotts or lube, hooked the top in first and started pulling the string at the bottom, just take your time and if it gets to tight start on the other side, ya can gently tap the seal into place too, but make sure it is the seal and not the glass because it will break lol also you waont to be ending in the middle, hope that helps

all i know is the bloke i brought the car off fitted one and he knows feck all about cars, so if he can do it so can i.

advice all taken in and ill be back........

is it best to have the string on the inside of the screen then whilst pushing from the outside then

Yes I think that is the only way you can do it, you pull the sting into the cabin.

Yes you lay the string in the recess of the seal, then pull it inwards causing the inner seal to lip over the aperture of the shell. ;)
