Itg Air Filters

Recommended Posts

A2TheA

Hi all I have recenly got my car back and am looking into getting some filters for my mi16 on jenveys.

I like the look of the individual sock filters that itg do, but what are your experinces and what air filters are you using?

I wouldlike to have individual filters on there insead of the bigger filters with the back plate etc.

Thanks

Aaron

I run them on my 8 valve hillclimb/road car on Webers and have had no problems.

Don't use socks, they're wank. Use one of the Megaflow filters, they allow the engine to breathe better.

My car makes the same power using sock's as it does with K&N's.

I tested this on a rolling road last year.

They must be fitted properly or you will lose power.

I had socks on a previous mi16 engine, and they didnt suit at all. At oulton park the engine felt restrictive and wouldnt rev at all above 6000, it felt like the timing was wrong. Pulled the socks off and all back to normal.

I wasn't certain about them but i needed to get the car set up on the rollers. I tried with K&N's then sock's then nothing.

Power/torque difference was virtually identical.

You've seen my engine bay Aaron. It has an ITG50 filter.

You must place the centreline for the trumpets nearer the top edge to get bonnet clearance (at least I had to).

Regarding socks (!!!), as said, the general advice is do not use them for several reasons. Others have experienced poor power results, but even worse some have seen them get sucked into the engine.

So as Swordy said: use a flat or sausage ITG filter and mount it off centre. This'll be about £120 including plain back plate. I used Europaspares for both of mine. I didn't like dealing with Merlin.

I'm using a 50 on my carbs (a good 15mm space between the filter and the trumpets) and i had a blank back plate pressed out on a fly press. Which cost about £60 for the whole lot.........i don't mind dealing with Merlin B):D

Thanks Rich. Are the back plate holes central? How would you mount it off centre?

you buy a plate without holes and drill your own B)

I've only heard bad things about sock filters, apparently they can ruin the intake tuning (but then this only applies if you have a tuned length inlet) and what people have already said about them getting sucked in. But then like most people posting I have absolutely no experience to back this up. B)

I think when I get my TB's fitted and mapped I might try a power run with the airbox and filter, a run with a "sausage" filter and a run with these sock filters to see what differences they actually make.

As Welshpug and I said, you get a blank/plain back plate.

Go have a look in the last few pages of my 2.2 Mi16 engine build thread. The link is in my signature. Pictures speak 1109 words.

EDIT:

Ref the offset, you have to go do this yourself mate.

What I did, was measure the wall thickness of the filter, and have the lip of the trumpet butt up to that. Then I marked the centreline I needed. The pics in my project thread will show what to do, but your trumpets may be different, so no-one can give you an exact measurement.

Get the back plate, trumpets and bodies, a rule, a piece of cardboard etc and do what I did. Having the holes pressed out will be neater and easier than cutting them out with a holesaw. The real challenge is getting the additional small 8 holes right to screw the back plate into the backs of the trumpets. That is if your trumpets have fixing holes in of course.

I'll go and have a look cheers. I have access to a laser so if I can get the measurements then it'll be dead easy :-)

Exactly, someones "best" set-up could be complete s*ite on yours. It isn't hard to offer the backing plate up and seeing where the holes need to be.

Socks suck! And they don't last and they can be sucked in too. I experienced once, the top of it got sucked in and stuck around the throttle plate.

After I have changed to the sausage type, I feel the power is increased significantly (or perhaps I should say the power comes back).

I cut the holes also holes to give room for the injectors and sealed with fiberglass.

heya Aaron, I've got a set of ITBs on my GTi6 and its running large "sausage" style ITG air filter across the front of them. Chopped a little bit of the underside bonnet frame and the bonnet slam panel to make it fit better though. I would take a photo, but alas the car has been in the (repair) garage for months now having work done to it whilst I can't drive it.
