Fuel Filter Advice

Ok I got a new fuel filter from the following company http://comline.uk.com/, won it of ebay, not sure how well known company is or how good filters are it looks pretty good filter and exactly same as my original.

 

I want to have a crack at fitting it myself all sounds quite easy and its easy to access to filter, but in haynes it says to depressurise the fuel system first as I can understand but how do I this? also any tips on undoing bolts etc... :)

or just do what ive done and just take it off, petrol is going to piss out all over anyway, whats the point in depressurising it ?

Depends if you like getting pressurised fuel in your eyeball :)

thanks welshpug i'll do that rather have less fuel in my face if poss :) how long should i crank it over just afew sec?

it'll probably fire up for a few seconds then splutter out if the fuel system holds pressure as intended (normally some residual pressure still in the system for several hours, if not days)

I've always just disconnected the pipes and then stuck in the new filter. Happy to sniff some fumes from the drops of leaked petrol :P Never ever been very much of it.

looks like i'll be taking it to a garage to change filter :( Those banjo bolts have seized on there no change at moving them and now the filter is spinning round in the clamp B) buggery :D

you're meant to hold the filter with a spanner, there are flats under where the banjo screws in.

haha fine fuel spray in the eye stings ! a lot ! i personally would just crack the fuel feed to the fuel rail and wrap a towel around it too soak the pressurised fuel up and then just tighten it back up. job dne. B)

22mm spanner will hold the filter, just under the top pipe banjo, on top of the filter

Surely buying one would be cheaper than going to a garage to get it sorted, and as a plus point you have a nice new tool to use again...

Alternatively use a filter strap to hold it tight

Got my adjustable on it...just...when I did mine. The banjo bolts are pretty tight as the copper gaskets leak otherwise....helpfully new filters don't seem to come with new copper gaskets. Answer is to anneal the old ones, thus softening them. Easy to do provided you have gas cooker or blowlamp....but I still had to do mine up very tight to stop petrol weeping out.

 

I didn't bother depressurising mine, just left the car a day or so before doing the job....probably lost half a cup of petrol. Trick is to loosen off slowly so pressure dissipates gradually. All that said, running the engine on with the pump fuse out is hardly time consuming or difficult.

no matter I ended up taking it to an old mate I know at a garage he used to own a 205 gti for rally knows them very well. Just took it him explained all the flaws, fit me this and that and just get it running better, so hopefully i'll get a much better gti back :lol:

sod the cost :blush:
