Throttle Sticking Open When Hot

Recommended Posts

munster

When my Mi gets 'hot' or just over halfway on the water temp gauge, the revs will rise of their own accord and i have to control the car on the clutch.

Once i pull away and get into 2nd they settle back to normal again.

Oddly though, i dropped the misses home the other night and let the car sit for a good 20 mins before setting off again. However when i started it, the revs slowly continued to rise. Got upto to 2nd gear and all was well.

Ive managed to avoid any heavy traffic jams so far, but if i get stuck in one, i will be in real trouble.

Any suggestions?

Ive no doubt it will rise to limiter. Ive always managed to hold it on the clutch so far.

This happens from idle, and also when running and get stuck in traffic for example. The fan does cut in by the way.

Just happened again. Dropped my girlfriend off, and sat chatting or 25 mins, started the car and it basically drives itself for about 400 meters or so. I then pull up at some traffic lights and its running fine again..

is it the throttle sticking ? check by getting under the bonet if you can, if the throttle valve is sticking you will be able to see it, if not play with the idle screw see if that makes a difference.

check for any air leaks in the inlet manifold and pipe contributing.

let me know how you get on. all the best

I dont think the throttle is sticking, as this problem occurs when the car has been sat for 20 mins. Also the revs will rise by themself when sitting and idling..

Well the engine needs to draw more air in for an increase in engine speed, so I would take the throttle body off and give it a good inspection, check the all the air pipes that are cnnected to the inlet manifold and throttle body, thaeres gota be some kind of air leak therem

The idle screw allowes air to pass the throttle butterfly valve when idleing in order to give it the air needed to tick over there might be a fault with this that only occurs when at running temp ?

Let me know if you find anything suspisous

MrG

is the screw/bolt loose that holds the oil filler neck onto the inlet (or even missing?) as this just lets air into the chamber if thats the case.

If not it sounds like you need to give it all a good clean and refix together with new gaskets to ensure all is good.
