starting problem still continues... but today driving local, and this seems to have been getting worse over past week or so, I pulled up outside a Peugeot dealer to call someone turned car of after speaking for about 5min went to start car but it was just turning over and not starting, grrr I noticed I had the STOP lit up on dash but the battery light wasn't lit anyway tried ages to try and start it but nothing, thought bet its battery going flat went to Peugeot dealer who happen to have battery and jump leads came to car connected everything up and it started straight away, (coincidence?). Anyway continued journey went to Morrisons was in there about 20min or so come back out got in car and started straight away driving along a busy road about 5-10min later in traffic idling ok suddenly just cuts out this time battery light on dash was on and stop light again tried starting again just turning over not starting..., decided to move car to safe place on side of a road tried again for abit then thought bugger it RAC time phoned them was on phone for about 5-10min, thought I will try it again turns ignition on start button fired straight away! wtf is going on I thought :) anyway started to reverse and it died again on me and wouldn't start again left ignition of for about 5min again tried again and it fired! :). I drove it down the side street to end of junction turned right onto main road going down it and suddenly started losing power and rev counter needle was bouncing all over place felt abit like it was misfiring cut out again luckily I was outside a large petrol station with a garage, so with help again we pushed onto fore court, was sat waiting for RAC and a lad came from the garage this was after being sat for about 20min asked what was wrong explained what had been going on he said try start it then I said it will probably start now its been stood and it did so drove it up to garage doors and he tested battery as I thought it was this, next thing RAC guy turned up, while car was running was getting about 13.3v which he thought sempt low they thought is the alternator charging battery anyway RAC guy opened throttle and volts were going up so ruled alternator out and said battery is ok something else. RAC guy followed me home only up road as I was coming close to home died again this time it started again quicker moved again and started losing power again and rev needle going wild also as i was giving it throttle sounded like it was miss firing abit, so we decided to push it to my flat from here only bit away got it to flat and RAC guy said we will check for a spark but low and behold it started straight away this time wasn't doing it ;) the RAC guy said he would change dizzy cap and rotor arm possibly this.

phew glad thats over :P

anyone any clues here?? :D

Is it a mi?

I had exactly the same problems last year. Everything and everyone pointed me to the ignition amp. Replaced with new Bosch parts twice with no resolution. Turned out to be the Crank Angle Sensor on the flywheel.

Quoted for the god damn truth!

Been there, suffered from that! Was my dizzy.

H&H Ignition solutions will rebuild your dizzy 'from' around £40 IIRC.

BOSCH Ignition amps are about £60 from a bosch dealer. Dont get anything but BOSCH/Marelli Magnetti/Ducellier (match up with what comes off as long as its one of these 3). The paste is really important too :D

Is the 1.9 Motronic? It may be possible that it has a CAS on the flywheel

Ignition Amp costs were about £26 for s*itty brand (bad rep), and about £45 for genuine Bosch. I seem to remember that you could get them direct from USA on Ebay aswell. Best place is to get a second hand one of good known working order - anywhere from around £5 upwards. Make sure the number is correct, and that you use some heat sink gunk when fitting.

Don't know about dizzy - shouldn't be too much.

Guest nickgtirep

had similar probs before, id check your altenater belt tension and that ur altenater is secure as just over 13 volts is a tad low it should be about 14.5v.

also check ur altenater wires are secure and ur batery terminals.

just wondering could ht leads be causing this issue reason I ask is because they are not a tight fit on the dizzy infact I have had to tie wrap them together otherwise they tend to fall off  seem pretty secure with tie wraps though but there are large gaps at top where they join on dizzy just wondering if water could be getting down them

Before you spend pennies:

Take the ignition amp off the ally plate. Clean up the plate with some 800 grit wet and dry. Clean the back of the amp with thinners/nail polish remover/vodka/whatever... same on your ally plate. Get some PC CPU paste (maplins/PC World) apply it to the back of the amp and refit.

Might cure your bother.

Also im not sure if this is 'the way' to tell, but.. My knackered dizzy had a shed load of play in its spindle, its working replacement had very little. Might be worth checking yours too to give you an idea? Mark where the dizzy currently sits with a perma marker before you take it off and get a new oil seal from pug first too.

Get some decent HT leads tight wad!

~ £30

Might as well get a new dizzy cap and rotor am + NGK plugs while your at it. You cant fault find if the basics are shagged!

cheers merlin when the heat sink compound was mentioned I thought if its like a CPU where old compound can cause overheating maybe thats what is happening on car  so applying some fresh stuff might work  will try that merlin ta

Seriously - that's effing unreadable - if you want people to help you'll get a better response if people can read your request without getting a migraine. Seeing as you can't be bothered I'll do it for you.

My starting problem still continues...

Today I was driving the car locally (and the problem seems to have been getting worse over past week or so) I pulled up outside a Peugeot dealer to call someone. I turned the car off after speaking for about 5min, then went to start the car but it was just turning over and not starting, grrr.

I noticed the STOP light was on the battery light wasn't. Tried ages to try and start it but nothing, thought 'bet its battery going flat' so I went to Peugeot dealer who happen to have battery and jump leads. I connected everything up and it started straight away (coincidence?).

Anyway continued on my journey. I went to Morrisons was in there about 20min or so. I came back out got in car and started straight away driving along a busy road. About 5-10min later in traffic (idling ok) then it suddenly just cuts out. This time battery light on dash was on and stop light. Once again I tried starting again just turning over not starting...,

I decided to move car to a safe place on side of a road tried again for a bit then thought bugger it RAC time. I phoned them was on phone for about 5-10min so thought I will try it again. Turn ignition on start button fired straight away!

'What the fanny is going on?' I thought. Hahaha - anyway I started to reverse and it died again on me and wouldn't start. Once again I left ignition off for about 5mins - tried again and it fired! Hehe

I drove it down the side street to end of the junction, turned right onto main road going down it and suddenly started losing power and the rev counter needle was bouncing all over place. It felt a bit like it was misfiring, then cut out again. Luckily I was outside a large petrol station with a garage, so with help again we pushed onto forecourt. Whilst I was sat waiting for RAC a lad came from the garage (this was after being sat for about 20min). He asked what was wrong so I explained what had been going on. He said 'try start it'. I said 'it will probably start now its been stood' and it did.

I drove it up to garage doors and he tested battery as I thought it was this, next thing RAC guy turned up. When the engine was running the battery was putting out 13.3v which he thought seemed low. Perhaps the alternator wasn't charging the battery.

The RAC guy opened the throttle and volts were going up so ruled he alternator out and said battery is ok. Obviously it must be something else. the RAC guy followed me home (which was only up the road as I was coming close to home).

The engine died again - this time it started again more quickly. We moved off again and started losing power with the rev needle going wild. Also I noticed that as i was giving it throttle the engine sounded like it was missfiring a bit. We decided to push it to my flat. The RAC guy said we will check for a spark but low and behold it started straight away. This time it wasn't doing it

The RAC guy said he would change dizzy cap and rotor arm.

Phew - I'm glad thats over

Does anyone have any clues to what was going on here??

Next time make more of an effort to be clear and maybe people will make an effort to help. We're not sat in your head.
