Best Place To Get A 8v Head These Days?

Recommended Posts

Rob Thomson

Hello chaps,

Following the demise of Longman where's the best place to get a proper 8V head these days, i.e. tailored to its user and purpose, and more flow than Hurricane Katrina?

Cheers, Rob.

I'd personally contact Sandy Brown as a starting point, either to see if he would take it on, or to get recommendation on who to go to.

I know just the man, We have just done a 8v with a piper 285 cam, Bodies + Omex & std 1.6 pistons with 170 bhp, 10bhp up from QEP a couple of years back keeping the large inlet valves just re-working the head, With a decent cam it should see 190 with ease

Is that a 1.9 engine making that power ?

Cheers,

David

Yes it is, with work the most you can get within a reasonable budget is 240bhp

Cheers,

David

My Longman GpA 1.9 built to be circa 190bhp, full 'race' head (whatever that means!), 300degree cam, custom pistons etc and on twin 45s. It has around 165bhp at the wheels.

Cost IRO £6-7k if that helps.

Figures.

I suppose I've spent £4k getting 240ish out of a 16v iron block 2.2, so getting 240 out of a N/A 1.9 alloy block is extreme high end, high cost stuff. I also suspect this'll be a very peaky engine which needs to be screaming. This'll most likely mean it'll need lots of TLC too.

In short (dons flamesuit), I don't think average people should get too excited about seeing these kinds of figures for 8v engines, believing they are in reach of anyone but a small minority.

Head wise not too much as I have the Race cam's kicking around which I'm not sure they are available any more unless done to spec, then it's just the porting etc but a complete engine can be anything you please, a mate of mine when racing never spent anything on his bar forged piston's and it lasted but he's one of the luckiest people I know.

With that power thou you must run the right oil or the Cam will wear the bucket's out in no time at all

What grade oil do you recommend for a tuned 8v? Been deliberating what grade for mine. (solid lifters, 300deg cam, 11.5-1 comp etc).

Depends on what oil temps you've been getting, cooling capacity and also what use the car gets (if you've no way of performing cool down laps and it sits straight after use, temps will soar).

You need to make sure your oil has zinc in it, or use an additive. Cam lobe to bucket contact is the most highly stressed area of an engine. The zinc helps cushion the load. Most "road" oils no longer contain zinc as its harmful to cats.
