Timing Belt And Tensioner Confused

Recommended Posts

205*31*

Ok I gather there are 2 different timing belts a 113 toothed one and a 114 one plus the tensioner either spring loaded or the later bearing one, I have a 1.9 engine but no idea of age so confused as to which of these i need.

is the engine in the car?

the change in design of the tensioner is what necessitated a change in belt length, so you need to check which you have.

Check the back of the cambelt end flange for a protruding thread with 16mm locknut on & squiare drive on.

As shown in this picture

If it has this you have the sprung tensioner.

The cambelt covers can be a hint as the eccentric roller tensioners also changed the top covers from two piece tin to one piece plastic ones but thats not as surefire as the thread above.

Graham.

And if you are changing the waterpump, that is a slightly different design as well.

Generally speaking, almost all 205/309 GTi engines are the earlier 113 tooth belt and sprung tensioner setup.

It only seems to be late '92 onwards CAT-equipped engines with the later 114 tooth belt and escentric tensioner setup

I'd say it will be the earlier set up, spring loaded, as it has the tin top cover. The later eccentric tensioner is quite rare really.

ok thanks tom i'll get the parts together ready for fit  looking forward to having a passenger ride in that turbo beast of yours ;) I have owned an evo 4 in past around 400bhp I know how turbocharged cars feel  but in something that weighs around 900kg with 200bhp it must put a smile on your face :)

No probs. I'm aiming to get it tested sometime this week and taxed from the start of April hopefully. It is quite entertaining.
