Oil Out Of Breather

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Took my car out for a run tonight for the first time in a few months although I have had it started and left ticking over during the winter.

When I got it back home there was an oil/mayo residue over the gearbox from my breather,The engine was rebuilt around 400 miles back,Car felt like it was going well,Oil pressure was around 70psi at 6000rpm.

I noticed before I went out in car there was alot of mayo in the oil cap/breather,Is it possible that this was the excess condensation getting blown out after sitting for so long ?

I assume now that fitting a catch tank on these is a good idea !!

The last compression test I carried out was approx 180psi across the four cylinders and the test was done cold.

Forgot to mention,

This is on a 1.9 MI16

if this was a rebuilt engine it is quite possible a liner did not seat/seal itself properly. good luck. other than poor breathers i dont know what else to suggest to you.

The car isn't using any water,I think the mayo has just come with being left ticking over during the winter it cleared when I went out for a run last night,I say cleared what I mean is,It covered the engine as I have a small filter on the end that use to go to the throttle body !!

I have been out and fired the car up today,Car starts first time idles well and oil pressure is 90+psi on tick over cold.

I'm going to try steam cleaning the engine bay and I will route the breather pipe into a bottle to see what is happening !!

Am I correct in saying though,If the engine is healthy I shouldn't be getting oil out from my breather pipe at the top of the oil cap ?

I use a catch tank on mine although it is a track car (8v 1.9) and spends most of its time above 6k.

the mayo is just be the condensation not burning off due to short duration running, I get this on my daily driver as it barely gets hot before its switched off, a goo run normally clears this though.

I was just about to ask a similar question about my car as I'm getting exactly the same (rebuilt 500 miles back and with a breather filter instead of the pipe going back into the inlet too!).

Seems to go fine still and no water usage, oil in water, steam etc. Nothing to worry about really then, just need a catch tank I guess? Phew.
