Recommended Posts

will the pully from a gti6 head fit on an 8v cam?

If its the same width as the othr verniers from various engine through out the pug range then you might need to get it machined / turned down so its thinner & the hub trimmed to clear the cover mounting plate (I've done this with the vernier from a TUD5).

According to this topic they don't fit the Mi16 so from that I expect they need work to fit the 8v.

This topic might also hold some further info.

Graham.

comparing a gti6 cam to an 8 valve cam I have here the ends look identical, but like Graham said I don't think the offset will be correct, haven't got an 8 valve pulley off an engine to compare though.

the pin hole to lock the cam in place is much closer to the outer edge on the 8 valve, its right on the hub of the gti6 pulleys.

The TUD5 pulley I turned down to fit has a ring of holes on the pulley which luckily one matched up ideally with the 8v timing pin hole on the head with the pulley in the right place.

I did a quick comparison last night and the only real difference was the width of the GTI6 one

Cheers gents

I tried the vernier I have on a cam tonight, it fits perfectly!

The only differences as far as I can see are the actual width of the toothed part of the pully and the internal part where the cam mates to the pully may be different

I will get some pictures up tomorrow

I think we knew it would fit Pete, but the issue is stand-off and clearance from the head. I even had this with a DW8 vernier pulley; another cheap-man's option. :)

QEP made up a bush for the DW8, and as Graham said earlier, you may need a bush and/or to machine/mill down the pulley width.

Excellent work though, as between us we can shortly produce a 'How to Get Cheap Adjustable Cam Pulleys' thread showing how to use DW8s, TUD5 and GTI6 pulleys in order to fine tune cam timing, which is perhaps particularly relevant with aftermarket cams.

Nice one.

P.S. I'm coming up to see your neighbour in about 3 weeks and would like to collect those 2 gearboxes if you can help out.

Rich that's fine

Unfortunately I will be in Ireland that weekend though

As for the pully, I have 2 of the earlier gti6 pullys so will get my father inlaw to have a go at one on his lathe

If he can't do it I will find somewhere where I will have to pay to get it done :)

Anyway I shall keep people posted

I don't see there being any failure issues with this Pete. Firstly the pulleys I have given you look to be in better nick. Secondly there is much less pressure on the 8 valve pulley.

indeed, the 8 valve engine doesn't have 16 double valve springs to contend with for example!
