Thermostat Seal

This will probably get the award for stupid question of the week, but I'm changing (or rather putting in... there wasn't one before :unsure: ) the thermostat today and have conflicting descriptions of how the seal goes on.

 

The Haynes book of lies suggests that the seal goes in to the housing before the thermostat, but Service box (which I'm inclined to agree with) shows that the thermostat goes in first then the seal on next.

 

Can anyone please confirm for me before I fill it all back up with fluid and find it pi$$ing all over the multiplug?

 

One last quicky, it appears that in an effort to get it to seal with out a thermostat or a rubber seal, the last owner has done up the bolts super-tight and partially stripped one of the threads in the housing. I've managed to pinch it up fairly tight but probably not as tight as it should be. Should I expect it to weep water when it is back together? Any comments on this are gratefully received!

depends which type of seal it is, if its just a thin ring then there should be two IIRC.

 

but it its grooved then it sits over the edge of the thermostat.

It actually came with two thin-ish orings (and a few more for other applications at a guess), but using two, the cover no longer sits flush to the housing. Service box shows one ring after the thermostat which kind of makes more sense!

that would make sense to me that it doesn't sit flush, means its compressing the rubber seals!

 

 

servicebox says there's meant to be two as well

Ok, I'll give it a go with the two and cross my fingers! What's the worst that can happen? :P

Shouldn't have said 'What's the worst that can happen'!!! :P

 

The extra pressure popped the last bit of good thread from the housing. Game over!

 

Anybody got any suggestions or is it a replacement housing?

I cleaned the thread out an used a longer bolt on mine, I think some cars used a stud instead of a bolt, there is one shown on servicebox.

Ah, ok, not the only one then! I'll see if I can find a longer bolt first. I better learn how to use a tap as well...

 

It's always the 'quick' jobs that seem to spiral to something involving tools you don't have!

Well, managed to find a fix based on what you said Welshpug. :P The word 'stud' not only made me snigger slightly, but also got me thinking...

 

Remembered that a while back I bought some studs for something else off Peugeot but they sent the wrong ones. I kept them anyway thinking they'd come in useful and indeed they have!! Fitted a treat and torqued down very nicely. Problem solved!

the two seperate seals are used with the alloy thermostat cap, and the seal that sits over the thermostat is more common with the black plastic thermostat cap :P

So that's why it came with both types of seal then!

 

Refilled, bled and run... No leaks! Pretty chuffed with that.
