405 Mi16 - Back Brakes Not Working

Recommended Posts

rob321

Hello.

The rear brakes on my 405 do not work. I have replaced the compensator valve to no avail. There is no fluid even getting to the calipers, but there is pressure at the inputs to the compensator.

Im asssuming this could be blocked lines? Any other ideas as to what may be causing this?

Cheers, Rob.

was there a clip over the compensator when you fitted and bled it? was the spring set to the same length as the old one?

these are notoriously difficult to get all the air out of the rear brakes, they need to be on the ground with the suspension compressed or to have the clip ont he valve holding it open when fitted.

Oh I took that clip off, I didnt think it was needed ;)

You think that would stop fluid coming out altogether?

not totally, but it wont help when you're trying to bleed it as you just wont get the pressure there.

pop the clip back on and have another go.

you did make sure the spring was set the same as the old one as well ?

I had loads of trouble trying to bleed my 405's brakes after fitting new rear calipers, at the time I let my local specialist sort it and they found the valve was seized.

only a few weeks ago my mum's 405 estate failed its MOT on a broken spring, cue one new Bendix-ATE valve, fitted with the clip still on the valve, manual 2 man bleeding got it sorted ;)

Thanks.

I didnt bother adjusting the spring straight away - I was going to do this once it was all bled thorugh.

There are 4 pipes going into the compensator - I'm assuming the two with the 13mm nuts (larger ones) are the inputs?

no, IIRC one side of the vehicle has the larger unions, the other side the smaller ones, I didn't make note which was which though.

having the spring not adjusted as well wont have helped you
