Gti6 Air Filter Setups?

Recommended Posts

Joshy

Hi guys

I'm just sat here wondering what other GTI6 powered 205s did for their air filter setup?

Here's mine excuse the thumb, it is the only engine bay sort I've got!

DSCF5702.JPG

As you can see, it probably isn't the best location in the with it sucking in nasty warm air. I was wondering if there was fairly simple way of getting some nice cool air into the engine baring in the mind the cramped conditions of a 16v 205 engine bay.

Is it even something that I should be worrying about? The car ran fine with its current setup

Any ideas?

Which top rad hose are you using? I'm using the std 8v hose which gives enough room for a 90 degree bend downwards off the end of the inlet with a cone filter on the end or an airbox...

Smaller cone fixed straight onto TB with direct feed pipe from front of car I would say :P

Just looking at routing my throttle cable on my conversion, yours looks neat the way you have got it,works ok?????

On the Gti6 they run a strange way right round the front over rad and back by battery,or like a large 'S' routing over the top of inlet manifold and cam covers

Also is the ECU ok out in the open like yours?????(IE water proof ;) )

Standard gti6 elbow with the same stainless mesh cone shown in the first picture, fixed with a bracket to the front panel between gearbox and rad

I got a Pipercross cone filter and a silicon hose joiner and mounted it straight to the TB. It's tight but it fits.

My filter is down by the gearbox with a louvred cover inside the wheel arch to stop as much water getting to the filter but still direct air onto the brake caliper to keep things cooler. My setup seems different to all these pictured I think mine is still has the vacume pump setup and the engine is in the origional gti6 position as the bulkhead was cut and welded. Is there an advantage to removing the vacume pump?

If you are worried about the ecu getting wet you can use the gti6 battery box and ecu holder it tucks it all away neatly and protects it from the elements.

the picture I put up is of a 2.0 MI16 with a gti6 inlet, it came from a 405, 405's that don't use a vacuum pump.

ECU is mounted where the standard 205 one sits.

I had a custom red 90 degree angle pipe made up that came off the GTi6 throttle body and pointed downwards. Onto this was a K&N cone filter which was attached by a bracket to a bolt on the gearbox. Loads of people kept saying "don't drive in the rain or puddles etc", but I drove it in all weathers and it was perfectly fine as most of the "splash" was shielded by the radiator and gearbox.

Nowadays I use a ITB setup from Colin and Sandy and it sounds and goes so much better. 8)

If it was on a race or rally car would the best position be as in the first pict with air vents in the bonnet. Example Ford rs turbo type vents. Also what do you think about these http://www.modworld.co.uk/citroen-xsara-20...-kit-3832-p.asp

Harryskid :D :D

I still wondering has anyone used these and will they fit into a 205. I'am still putting bits together be for i fit my vts in and as my old 1900 k-n is rather naff i want to get a new one. Any way i don't know if the old k-n is the right one.

Your old K&N will be way too small :D

That filter in your link looks no good, that will be designed to fit onto the Xsara pipework looking at it,that you won't have fitted in 205 :D

Just measure the size of the throttle body inlet, then search on E-Bay for a cone filter with a neck that will suite :D

Then just fix it straight to throttle body as in the pics above and mine below :D

That's not exactly accurate advice. If you look at the full product line for K&N, Green etc, you'll probably find filters available with the correct neck size but not offering enough flow for the given power rating of the engine in use.

So in other words, you need a filter with the correct diameter AND of big enough size to not be restrictive to the engine.

have a look at greenfilters.com they have a helpful indication of how much power a particular filter will flow, most filters used have a fair difference between the point they become restrictive and the engine they're bolted to.

Yes i was looking at some and how much bhp they could handle was given. Since a gti6 in std form should give aprox i suppose one giving 180 would be near the mark. Am i right?

You would need to try hard to find one restrictive with the correct size neck for Gti6 TB,would be circa 4 inches long <_< so can't see anybody buying one that small TBH :(

I personally don't think theres much to worry about with the BHP figures they state,as I've seen lots of Evos and Imprezas running small mushroom type Jap style air filters that are pushing alot more than standard power :D
