Ignition Advance/retard

I removed my distributer tonight but forgot to mark it !!

 

Anyway I have it back on and working again but I'm curious to know what way I should be turning the dizzy to advance/Retard it while standing at the front of the car.

 

Standing at the front if I turn dizzy towards front of car(Anti clockwise) the car really struggles to turn over but if I turn it towards the bulkhead(clockwise) there appears to be a loud clattering noise on tick over !

 

Obviously I have it set some where in the middle,where the car starts no problem and idles well.

That knocking sound is called pinking, what you need to do is find a long hill, fill up with your favoured fuel, then in a high gear at low revs accelerate up the hill, adjust the distributor back towards the bulkhead till it pinks then back a touch.

 

top towards the bulkhead is advancing, i.e the rotor passes the contact on the cap earlier, top forwards is retarding.

 

 

make sure your advance capsule works and is not leaking, pull the pipe off the throttle body and suck on it, there should be resistance.

 

 

 

when you have done that you probably will need to adjust your fuel mixture at idle with the screw on the AFM, and the idle speed with the Air screw on the throttle body :huh:
