Standard Exhaust System Or Aftermarket?

Recommended Posts

I have heard the standard exhaust system for my 205 gti mi16 is good enough and often people get less power when they fit an after market. I am not in to loud back boxes and so i want to change my exhust sytem to standard I think its a stainless steel power flow or magnex on there at the moment. would this be a wise move?

Ok my experience over the years with my own 205's

8v - standard system with Magnex back box - boomy and annoying

8v - Full magnex set up - nice sound refined, less boomy in ther cabin - nice tuned sound on acceleration which also 'felt' a bit better.

Mi16 - Maniflow 4-2-1 attached to the remainder of my Magnex. Boomy but nice tuned sound on acceleration, a bit of popping on overun, not discreet at the lights especially with a 'cammed' engine

Current

Mi16 - Maniflow 4-2-1 attached to an OE set up with a new stainless joiner section made up.

Boomy in the cabin although I tend to turn the radio up.

So much more discreet at the traffic lights. :P

Car has around 185bhp.

Unfortunately it's the nature of straight-through silencers that make them boomy so there isn't much you can do about it unless you get into resonators and quarter-wave tubes. The standard baffled system may flow well but you're always going to lose a bit of power, whether it's noticeable or not is another thing.

Yep, stick with the standard set up, either via a chopped Mi16 manifold or Maniflow - supplied by Miles.

Can't comment for others but heard the same thing a number of times but I've got an aftermarket 2 1/4 inch system right through from a maniflow manifold and it makes a huge difference!

The jump from the standard manifold to the maniflow one was *very* noticable and the car gained quite alot of extra torque low down and mid-range
